Tomas Vergis comes to Caprica to seek vengeance on Daniel Graystone for two workers who were killed during the theft of his meta-cognitive processor. Sister Clarice tries to steal Zoe Graystone's avatar, a move that will reveal her plan and gain attention from STO soldiers who now follow the reckless Barnabas Greeley.

Summary[edit]

Teaser[edit]

  • At the headquarters of the Vergis Corporation in Tauron City, Tomas Vergis walks to his lab--and notices that a keypad lock has been ripped out of the wall. He pushes the door open and enters the corporation's MCP Research Laboratory. A piece of equipment is missing. When he looks up, he sees blood smears on a wall, and on the floor beneath, two dead bodies.
  • One month later, at a museum on Caprica, Daniel and Amanda Graystone are enjoying a black tie function attended by many Graystone Industries shareholders; Daniel is receiving congratulations from the shareholders, the C-Bucs have won today's game, and some time has passed since anyone has called Amanda "Terror Mom." As they dance, Daniel freezes upon seeing Vergis standing next to a sculpture. Vergis defends himself against Daniel's accusation of crashing the party, and abruptly tells him about the theft and murders. "We should get together while I'm on-world," Vergis says. "Discuss the situation."
  • Upon returning to the Graystone Estate, Amanda asks about the exchange. Daniel claims that Vergis' only interest was a claim of intellectual property infringement related to the U-87. In the middle of their discussion, Serge interrupts to announce that Cyrus Xander has arrived. As Daniel walks downstairs, Amanda calls out to him, "You'll tell me the rest when you're ready, yeah?"
  • Xander asks Daniel for more details about Vergis' claims, while holding on to the hope that since there have been no legal charges related to the theft or the murders, Graystone and their company are still safe. Gradually, Daniel reveals that the Ha'la'tha was involved. Xander is flabbergasted and furious--and eavesdropping from inside the U-87, Zoe-A is troubled by the revelation. Xander calms down and offers advice for his meeting with Vergis. Daniel leaves to talk to someone about the matter, which Xander guesses is his "mob friend."

Act 1[edit]

  • Joseph Adama comes home with an Emptor Electronics bag, from which he takes out a holoband package. He activates the holoband, puts it on, and is transported to the interior of the virtual Graystone Industries building. Before he can get his bearings, a very bright-eyed, cheerful, and loud copy of Daniel welcomes him. Joseph tries repeatedly to get help finding his wife and daughter and accessing the "hacked worlds," but the avatar insists on showing him menus for licensed areas, while reminding him of the penalties for illegal operation. From somewhere, Joseph hears footsteps.
  • Without warning, Daniel is standing over him in the apartment, backed up by his bodyguard, and removing Joseph's holoband. He accuses Joseph of intentionally allowing Vergis to know about his involvement in the MCP theft. Joseph counters by telling him that Vergis is a friend of the Guatrau, and that if Vergis had known, Joseph would already be dead. He changes tracks, telling Daniel about Tamara-A, which Daniel refuses to believe. They start to yell until Willie wakes up. The two men quietly finish, warning one another.
  • Daniel cuts vegetables in his kitchen, thinking all the time about Vergis' claims and imagining the murders.
  • Clarice listens to a wireless report about another bombing of a holo cafe. Olaf and Nestor Willow think it is Barnabas Greeley, a move that Clarice believes is badly timed. Nestor interrupts, telling her about a swipe drive which can be used to capture the Zoe avatar and to create more avatars. Clarice acknowledge it, but reminds him that Zoe-A is not just an avatar, but a continuation of the eternal soul. Nestor tells her that she has to get close to Daniel's computer with the swipe drive, and use it to take Zoe.
  • Amanda takes a call. Clarice tells Amanda that she was "wonderful" on Sarno, and asks if she could come to the house to say goodbye to Zoe. Amanda walks into an empty room and tells Clarice that the Global Defense Department took all of Zoe's things. Clarice offers to bring some of Zoe's books to Amanda.
  • Joseph asks Sam Adama if there is anything the Guatrau could trace back to the two of them. Sam denies it, but Joseph pushes. Impatiently and vaguely, Sam tells his brother he did his job.
  • In the Graystone Industries boardroom, Vergis eats an imperfect Tauron steak in front of Daniel, who is confused by Vergis' change of mood. Daniel tells him flatly that he had no part in the crimes--but Vergis interrupts, informing him that now he is interested in buying the Caprica Buccaneers for 300 million cubits. He offers several explanations why, but ends by reminding Daniel that Graystone Industries needs cash in order to buy enough time to solve its problems with the MCP.

Act 2[edit]

  • Philomon takes a break in the Graystone Industries U-87 lab to smoke and to check his V-Match account; to his dismay, no one seems to be interested in him. He has a mock conversation with the U-87 about dating--until Daniel walks in.
  • In a warehouse on the Caprica City docks guarded by men with machine guns, Keon Gatwick informs Barnabas Greeley about Lacy's request. Keon vouches for her. Greeley walks out of his room, and shocks Keon with the sight of his right arm wrapped tightly and painfully with barbed wire; as Greeley puts it, "Pain keeps our brain from going down bad paths." He tells Keon that if God is guiding Lacy, then she will be accepted.
  • Clarice uses her holoband, and is sitting in a small confessional-like room with her disguised STO contact, Alvo. S/he tells Clarice that the "Conclave" supports Greeley over her quest for apotheosis. She argues that she needs more time in order to give the Conclave something tangible.
  • Walking through the halls of Graystone Industries, Xander tries to convince Daniel of the merit in Vergis' offer for the C-Bucs. Nothing they have done so far with the MCP has been successful, and the cash could give them the opportunity to find a solution. Daniel, however, remain suspicious.
  • Serge greets Clarice at the front door of the Graystone estate. Clarice is unsure how to respond to Serge, seemingly inexperienced with robots. Amanda intercedes and invites her in cheerfully, but grows quiet after accepting Zoe's books. They talk briefly about Agent Jordan Duram, and then Clarice notes a decanter of Scorpion Ambrosia. Both have a taste for it, even though most Capricans detest it. They start to drink, and Amanda invites Clarice into Daniel's lab to see Zoe's drawings.
  • At the Adama apartment, Joseph shows security camera photographs of Tad Thorean to Evelyn, and asks her to personally locate him.
  • Clarice's attention is drawn from Zoe's pictures to the U-87. She manages to place the swipe drive onto Daniel's computer and starts to download. She and Amanda talk about Zoe's hatred of Daniel's work and how she would react to having a "killer robot" in the house. Just as the download is completed, Amanda excuses herself for being drunk. They say farewell and embrace, with Clarice still clutching the drive.

Act 3[edit]

  • Keon and Lacy arrive at the dock and meet with Greeley. Lacy hesitates to tell him the nature of what she wants transported offworld, admitting only that Zoe died trying to do so. Greeley rejects the request and dismisses her. He erupts at Keon for bringing her, but calms himself and encourages Keon to find out the nature of the cargo before making a final decision.
  • Alone in the estate lab, Zoe-A accesses a computer and hastily types a response to Philomon's V-Match profile.
  • In the Caprica mediasphere, Vergis' offer for the C-Bucs is announced, the Global Defense Department raises the security threat level to "Serious," and the latest episode of Backtalk with Baxter Sarno begins.
  • Baxter Sarno introduces his next guest, an inventor, philanthropist, and an "excellent kisser"--Vergis. He presents Sarno with Tauron cigars, jokes about his rivalry with Daniel, and expresses sympathy for the Graystones and for others who were close to the victims of the Maglev bombing. He then pleasantly surprises the audience by announcing his intention to become a Caprican citizen.

Act 4[edit]

  • Philomon is working late when he receives an alert about a V-Match response from "Rachel." He slips on a holoband and enters the V-Club to meet her. Although Zoe-A is wearing glasses, Philomon instantly recognizes the face of Zoe Graystone. "Rachel" explains it as a failed attempt to protect herself from unwanted attention. Philomon confesses that despite the bombing, he admires Zoe Graystone's sense of principles.
  • Olaf and Nestor find Clarice at the Dive Bar, close to unconsciousness from alcohol and other drugs. However, they quickly find the swipe drive and note that she has completed her mission.
  • Daniel wakes up in the middle of the night, consumed with thoughts about the murders in Vergis' laboratory.

Act 5[edit]

  • Evelyn enters the Adama apartment with copies of Tad Thorean's Caprica City driver's license and high school ID. She asks to look underneath a bandage at the tattoo on his chest. They both become awkwardly aware of their proximity to one another.
  • Talking over drinks in his living room, Daniel confidently rejects Vergis' offer for the C-Bucs and calls him out on his pretense of Caprican identity and allegiance, all a part of a scheme to win over Daniel's military contract. Vergis does not lie about his desire for the contract, but he continues that his real goal is "to tear up your dream." The two men killed during the break-in were close to him, "like brothers," so close that he served as no-ness to their children. He rolls up his sleeve and shows Daniel a long row of Tauron tattoos covering his forearm, with two marks near the top indicating these children, who are now orphans. Vergis pledges to take away the precious things in Daniel's life: the C-Bucs, Graystone Industries, and more.

Notes[edit]

  • In a reference to the Original Series, a man on Talk Wireless mentions the Book of the Word at the beginning of Act Three.
  • According to The Caprican, the art Daniel Graystone and Tomas Vergis appreciate while speaking to one another is from Kobol. It is also real-life art by Bill Reid, Raven and the First Men, on exhibit in Vancouver and displayed on the back of the "Canadian Journey" series twenty dollar bill.
  • The first on-screen depiction of Tauron City is borrowed from Libran as shown in "The Plan." A small number of buildings were added to the shot, along with a wider view of the nighttime sky.
  • Philomon's V-Match profile identifies him as a fan of Gemenese monster movies and Backtalk with Baxter Sarno. Gemenese monster movies were previously referenced by Amanda Graystone in "Rebirth," stating that the U-87 reminded her of a monster that was depicted trampling Oranu.

Analysis[edit]

  • In this episode, Sister Clarice confirms that her faction of the STO intended to use Zoe's avatar as a means for achieving immortality, which she terms "apotheosis." This is a curious parallel to both Daniel Graystone and Joseph Adama's own intents with the technology, as well as to the resurrection capabilities of the humanoid Cylons. It is likely that this latter parallel is intentional and possibly connected, although it is also known from "No Exit" that the Final Five are responsible for (re)creating resurrection technology. Additionally, "Guess What's Coming to Dinner?" makes it clear that the Significant Seven do not know how the technology works. The difference is that the process of Cylon resurrection does not create a digital clone of a person's personality, but rather downloads the same personality back into a humanoid Cylon body. The duplication part of "apotheosis" parallels the existence of multiple copies of the Cylon models.
  • Just prior to the attacks on the Twelve Colonies as shown in "The Plan," the Hybrid reporting on the progress of the attack utters the line "Apotheosis was the beginning before the beginning," possibly confirming a link between Clarice's aims and the evolution of the Cylon race.
  • Although Lacy Rand's meeting with Barnabas appeared to be fruitless, it was not necessarily so. Barnabas revealed in the following conversation with Keon that he is willing to work with Lacy, so long as he knows what she's up to.
  • It is possible, given the STO's interest in Zoe Graystone's avatar program that they will attempt to create digital avatars of themselves, as well as dead people they know.
  • Evelyn's intimate moment with Joseph Adama, while brief, indicates that Evelyn may indeed become Willie's stepmother, which would validate his parentage as established in "Hero".
  • The STO are headed by a body called the Conclave, for which Barnabas acts as an enforcer.

Questions[edit]

  • Did Clarice really obtain Zoe's avatar program? If so, will she and the STO make more avatars with it? (Answer)
  • Will the program ever be used to make more than one avatar of the same person?
  • Given the similarities between "apotheosis" (as described by Clarice's faction) and resurrection is there any connection between the two? If so are Zoe-A and Tamara-A related to the Significant Eight's original selves (before they assumed humanoid form)?
  • How does Tomas Vergis plan to ruin Daniel?
    • Will he succeed?
  • Will Vergis discover Joseph Adama's connection to the robbery? If so, how will the Guatrau react?
  • Does Zoe-A have an ulterior motive in befriending Philomon within the V-world? Or is she simply lonely? (Answer)
  • Will Philomon discover Zoe-A's true identity? If so, how will he react? (Answer)
  • Will Evelyn's relations with Joseph Adama advance beyond the professional? (Answer)
  • Is Barnabas Greeley mentally unstable?
  • What makes Greeley such a fervent monotheist?
  • Will the disagreement between the factions of the STO represented by Greeley and Willow come to a head? (Answer)
  • What is a no-ness?

Official Statements[edit]

Noteworthy Dialogue[edit]

Clarice: Ooh, that's a scary thing.
Amanda: Oh yeah, that. That is the very, very important defense project that Daniel's been working on. Frakkin' ugly monster.

"The Face of the Enemy" is a webisode series featuring Felix Gaeta and two Number Eights who, along with a handful of humans, are stranded on a Raptor and mysteriously begin to die one by one. These events take place six to nine days after the discovery of Earth, between the episodes "Sometimes a Great Notion" and "A Disquiet Follows My Soul," although the webisodes were released prior to the first airing of "Sometimes a Great Notion".

The series is not included on the Region 1 box set for "Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5" (episodes 12-22) or the "Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series" box sets. Although listed on the distributor's website for the Region 2 DVD box set of "Battlestar Galactica: The Final Season" (episodes 12-22)[1] the series is absent from the released version.[2]

Summary[edit]

Episode 1[edit]

  • Release date: December 12, 2008
  • Running time: ~4:11
Gaeta and Hoshi kiss.

A blood-covered Felix Gaeta is in a Raptor adrift in deep space, nine days after the events of "Revelations". Flashbacks of a list of names being written on a pad, a Number Eight cutting into her palm, a pair of needle-nose pliers, and a struggle inside the Raptor segue to three days before (six days after "Revelations").

Over his protests, an exhausted Gaeta is ordered by Colonel Saul Tigh to take a week's leave aboard the Zephyr to recover. On his way to the hangar bay, Lt. Louis Hoshi catches up with him in the hallway, gives him morpha for his pain, then kisses him goodbye, evincing a romantic relationship. Joining Gaeta on the flight are deckhand Brooks, two Number Eights, and the Raptor shuttle flight crew, Lt. J. "Shark" Finnegan and "Easy" Esrin.

With the Raptor 15 minutes away from the Zephyr, DRADIS picks up hostile Cylon contacts and the Fleet is forced to make an emergency jump. The Raptor completes its jump, but discovers that the Fleet is nowhere to be seen.

Episode 2[edit]

  • Release date: December 15, 2008
  • Running time: ~3:42
The occupants of the stranded Raptor.

Shark broadcasts on wireless to any ships that might be nearby, Easy says she entered the right coordinates, and Gaeta's stump starts to act up. A worried Brooks suggests jumping back, thinking the Fleet might have left a Raptor behind for a little while, but the Eights don't think so, since that could give away their position to Cavil's ships. Gaeta is sure that the Fleet knows that they are missing and sent someone back to look, but that they can't find out because the jump drive isn't responding. Brooks begins to pray to Poseidon, puzzling the Eights since they are a long way from water, but Brooks replies they are in a ship after all. Shark discovers that the drive isn't responding because they have jumped over the red line and are thus unable to jump back to their starting point. The Eight in a Cylon flight suit ("Hard Eight") says she suspects as much, since she doesn't recognize the star patterns. Gaeta sits at the aft workstation and determines that the FTL computer's calculations were corrupted. Shark reasons that getting back to the Fleet is not impossible, just harder, and as Hard Eight and the others continue their discussion, the other Eight ("Sweet Eight") asks Gaeta if he recognizes her.

Back on Galactica, Hoshi is clearly worried for Gaeta. The DRADIS contact was a false alarm, the Fleet has jumped back to their original coordinates, and there has been no sign of the missing Raptor for two days. He asks Tigh for a Raptor and a pilot to search for the missing Raptor, explaining that just as something in the universe led them to Earth, he knows he can find them. He stops short of revealing just how close he is to Gaeta and instead asserts that there has been too much loss already. Tigh agrees to Hoshi's request, but will have to run it by Admiral Adama.

Back aboard the Raptor, Shark determines how long they can last out there. The limiting factor is the air supply; since the Raptor was on shuttle detail, the CO2 scrubbers were not fully functional. They have only 20 ½ hours with the air thinned out to 68% of ship-normal O2, so everyone must limit their exertion and sleep as much as they can to stretch out the supply. Easy points out that at that oxygen level people experience memory loss, irrational behavior, depression and dizziness.

Episode 3[edit]

  • Release date: December 17, 2008
  • Running time: ~2:42
Gaeta meets with an Eight on New Caprica.

Brooks offers to take a look at the Raptor's CO2 scrubbers and opens a side panel. Meanwhile, Gaeta recognizes Sweet Eight. A flashback to 15 months earlier on Cylon-occupied New Caprica shows the two meeting in a tent, with Gaeta looking over a list of names and handing it to the Eight. Gaeta looks concerned as Sweet Eight leaves the tent.

Brooks finds a loose connection, but has trouble reaching it. Hard Eight offers to take over, and Brooks hands her his pliers. She reaches it, then stiffens as she is electrocuted. Esrin kicks her free, and Gaeta checks for a pulse before declaring her dead. Brooks is stunned, exclaiming, "My gods, I was just doing that! I was just doing that same thing!" Sweet Eight calls attention to the pliers. Gaeta finds that the insulating grip has been stripped off and asks, "Who did this?"

Episode 4[edit]

  • Release date: December 22, 2008
  • Running time: ~3:12
Gaeta asks what to do with the dead Eight's body.

Shark examines the pliers and observes they are old and that the grips wore off, but Sweet Eight suggests that it wasn't an accident, that "someone didn't like the idea of a machine breathing their air." Brooks points that the pliers were his and he was the one who was supposed to have been killed, but Sweet Eight replies not unless he was the one who stripped the grips and questions how he could not have noticed the bare metal. Gaeta quashes the growing argument, saying it was an accident, and asks what to do with the corpse. Sweet Eight wants to jettison her, noting that she will otherwise begin to decay and corrupt the air, and that the oxygen in the cabin can be sucked back into the tanks with only a little loss. As flight suits are broken out and put on, Sweet Eight whispers to Gaeta that she has an idea how to get them home, that she will tell him when the others are asleep, and asks her him to trust her.

In a flashback to New Caprica, Gaeta writes down a list of names and what look like serial numbers for Sweet Eight. He tells her he hasn't seen some of these people in a long time, and they may already be dead. Sweet Eight reassures Gaeta that the Number Ones keep good records, and if some of them are locked up, she can find them and get them out, and reassures him that they can do this.

Back in the Fleet, Lt. Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson and Hoshi launch from Galactica in Raptor 1029.

Episode 5[edit]

  • Release date: December 24, 2008
  • Running time: ~4:42
The dead body is jettisoned.

The crew jettison Hard Eight's body. Afterwards, they settle down to sleep. Gaeta, apparently in pain, touches his stump and injects himself with a dose of morpha. Sweet Eight sees this but pretends to be asleep. Gaeta falls asleep as well and flashes back to New Caprica again, remembering Sweet Eight telling him she managed to get some of the people on his list out of detention. Others, she says, were already dead. She is particularly upset about a child whose fate is still a mystery and begins crying. Gaeta reassures her that they've done good and slowly leans in to kiss her.

In the present, Sweet Eight wakes Gaeta while the other three still sleep and proposes her plan. She will hook into the Raptor's systems much as Sharon "Athena" Agathon once did on the rescue mission to Caprica (TRS: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I"), in order to determine the corrupted memory address that made them jump to the wrong location. However, she is afraid that the others will think she is sabotaging the ship, so she asks Gaeta to cover for her while she works. Gaeta accidentally jars Brooks, who doesn't move. The two notice that Brooks has died of an overdose of Gaeta's morpha. Shark and Easy wake up and accuse Sweet Eight of having killed Brooks. Easy aims her pistol at Eight, who is shackled. Gaeta protests, but Eight tells them that she understands.

Episode 6[edit]

  • Release date: December 29, 2008
  • Running time: ~4:06

Raptor 1029 jumps into empty space on the first leg of Hoshi and Racetrack's search for the missing Raptor. They are disappointed to find nothing within DRADIS range, and make a second FTL jump to continue the search.

Back on the stranded Raptor 718, Easy and Shark are apparently asleep in the cockpit with the chronometer between them indicating the occupants’ available air supply counting down from nine hours and twenty-five minutes. A sleeping Gaeta dreams of Hoshi, then of his recent experiences aboard the Raptor. He awakes to find that Sweet Eight has freed herself from her bonds. When she asks if he’s going to restrain her again, he says his intention was to free her. After Eight cautions him against waking Shark and Easy, Gaeta hands her a scalpel and agrees to her earlier plan to physically interface with the Raptor’s systems. Eight slices open her palm and Gaeta helps her plug a data cable into the wound. Once Eight is connected, she says that the low oxygen levels in the compartment are making it difficult to project. When Gaeta asks what she is projecting, she replies, “You know where I am.” A flashback shows Gaeta and the Eight back on New Caprica, where the Eight gently kisses Gaeta. Back in the present, Eight attempts to do the same, but Gaeta interrupts her by saying he’s involved with someone. Though Eight tells him that she’s pleased and that he deserves his current happiness, the two kiss passionately until the Eight abruptly gasps, saying that she has found the Fleet. She then tells Gaeta to prepare for a jump, as she is about to take the Raptor home.

Episode 7[edit]

  • Release date: December 31, 2008
  • Running time: ~2:06

Aboard Raptor 1029, Racetrack mentions to Hoshi that she had hoped he and Gaeta would get together and was glad they finally did. Hoshi mentions Gaeta’s drive to do the right thing, which Racetrack inadvertently makes an offhand remark in response about the rarity and mortality attached to such a well-developed moral core and quickly admonishes herself for it. Hoshi absolves her of her slip of the tongue and encourages her to continue the search.

Raptor 718 completes its jump. The countdown on the occupants’ air supply reads eight hours and eleven minutes. Gaeta checks the rear console and finds to his chagrin that not only did the jump drain nearly all of the Raptor’s power reserves, but that neither the Fleet nor any other vessels are in DRADIS range. Gaeta surmises that the Fleet may still be nearby, but out of the Raptor’s DRADIS radius. Eight says she will send a pulse that will alert the Fleet to their position and estimates a ten-hour window for rescue. Gaeta heads to the cockpit to wake Shark and Easy, but is horrified to find them both dead, their throats slashed open. His hands are covered with their blood from his attempts to wake them. Gaeta then looks accusingly at Eight, whose only response is to silently meet his gaze.

Episode 8[edit]

  • Release date: January 5, 2009
  • Running time: ~3:06

Raptor 1029 completes its third jump, and, again, Racetrack and Hoshi see no sign of Raptor 718. Racetrack offers to plot another jump, and Hoshi agrees, but then asks Racetrack if she thinks it's crazy to continue the search. Racetrack reluctantly says she does, and adds that if Gaeta was in their position, he would also call off the search for Hoshi once it became clear that further searches were futile. After an uncomfortable silence, Racetrack finally asks if Hoshi wants to call off the search and return to Galactica. After a few seconds of pained consideration, Hoshi says yes.

Back on Raptor 718, Gaeta begins to piece everything together, realizing to his horror that Sweet Eight was responsible for every single death, an accusation Eight responds with sedate confirmation, claiming that she did it to give the two of them more air. She then says to an increasingly frantic Gaeta that she killed them all to protect him from his own desire to kill them all. Gaeta angrily denies Eight's words, tearing the data cable out of her palm. She then affirms that Gaeta is a killer at heart, that he was when he gave her the list of names.

Another flashback to the tent on New Caprica shows a sleeping Gaeta oblivious to Sweet Eight handing the list to another Eight, instructing her to kill everyone on it.

The flashback ends, as the realization draws over Gaeta's face.

Episode 9[edit]

  • Release date: January 7, 2009
  • Running time: ~3:41

Gaeta listens in horror as Sweet Eight reveals that she had most of the people on the lists he gave her killed, leaving only enough of them alive to make him think she had saved them all, fooling him into thinking he was doing some good by collaborating with her. She states flatly that in a war, a basic tactical maneuver is to kill the people your enemy values. She also forces him to acknowledge that Baltar knew what Gaeta and "his Eight" were doing all along. In a flashback to the Season 3 episode "Taking a Break From All Your Worries" where Gaeta interrogates Baltar before his trial, the words Baltar whispered to him which triggered Gaeta's attack are revealed: "I know what your Eight did." In a rage, Gaeta in the present mimics the Gaeta in the flashback – he picks up the scalpel and stabs Sweet Eight in the neck just as he stabbed Baltar.

Episode 10[edit]

As the last survivor aboard the ship, Gaeta tries to kill himself with an overdose of morpha but fails to inject the second dose. He starts to sing when suddenly the cabin is illuminated from outside. He is hailed by Raptor 1029.

Back on Galactica, Tigh tells a recovered Gaeta that the incident will not be investigated, as Admiral Adama does not wish to jeopardize the alliance with the Cylons. Gaeta bluntly asserts that the alliance should not exist at all, and requests to speak with Admiral Adama directly, on the grounds that the Colonel is a Cylon. Tigh agrees reluctantly, and invites Gaeta to a meeting of senior staff later that day to discuss the alliance. Gaeta leaves the CIC and meets Hoshi in the corridor. Gaeta insinuates gloomily that he has a plan and that something important will happen soon.

Notes[edit]

  • This story reveals that Gaeta is bisexual, as he is shown being romantically involved with both Hoshi (who in turn is also revealed to be either gay or bisexual as well), and one of the Number Eights.
  • According to Jane Espenson's writer's commentary, Gaeta and Hoshi's relationship ends at the end of episode 10.
  • Espenson's commentary highlights some changes that were made to the script during development.
    • Gaeta's present human lover was changed from Noel Allison to Louis Hoshi, because Sebastian Spence was not available.
    • Gaeta's Cylon ex-lover was changed from a Number Six to a Number Eight.
    • The two Cylons onboard were changed from two Sixes to a Six and an Eight when it became known that Grace Park would be available, and then to two Eights when it became known that Tricia Helfer would not be available.
    • Using two of the same model made it more practical to kill off one of the Cylons first, because scenes with multiple copies are difficult to shoot. Espenson says that this was retrospectively a blessing, because it made the conclusion that "Sweet Eight" is the killer less obvious.
    • "Sweet Eight" would originally have said that humans can delude themselves, but Cylon brains record only the truth. This was changed to a line about the similarity of human and Cylon brains after Grace Park pointed out that Eights have been some of the most self-deceiving characters on the show.
  • Felix Gaeta has a metal prosthetic leg.
  • The two Number Eights are nicknamed "Sweet Eight" and "Pilot Eight" in the commentary by Jane Espenson, the latter being the one in a Cylon flight suit. However, the script for this webisode lists "Pilot Eight" as "Hard Eight."[3]
  • "The Face of the Enemy" takes place between "Sometimes a Great Notion" and "A Disquiet Follows My Soul". Although shot after the conclusion of the fourth season, the events depicted in these webisodes help to explain Gaeta's animosity toward the Cylons in the latter episode.
  • Flashback footage from "Taking a Break From All Your Worries" is incorporated, and this story reveals what Baltar whispered to Gaeta during the earlier episode.
  • All Ten episodes are available in HD and Standard Definition from iTunes.
  • This story takes the form of a murder mystery.
  • The events on the Raptor directly lead to Gaeta teaming up with Zarek for an eventual failed mutiny and coup.
  • An error was made during webisode 6. While "Sweet Eight" attempts to plug a cable into her arm, Gaeta says "Oh, God," rather than "Oh, gods."

Analysis[edit]

Note: some of the following comments are based upon the fact The Face of the Enemy was webcast before the broadcast of "Sometimes a Great Notion" in which these facts are already in evidence as that story takes place prior to this one.
  • The rebel Cylon basestar is still with the Fleet.
  • Saul Tigh has returned to duty, despite being outed as one of the Final Five Cylons.
  • It now does not appear unusual to have Number Eights (besides Sharon "Athena" Agathon) aboard Galactica, or for them to be riding aboard Colonial shuttles.

Questions[edit]

  • What is Gaeta's plan? (Answer)

Official Statements[edit]

Noteworthy Dialogue[edit]

Louis Hoshi: Is this crazy?
Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson: Yeah. I'm sorry, but yeah... But look, he [Gaeta] wouldn't give up on you. Eventually, if it didn't make sense anymore, he'd have to. He'd understand.

Episode 1[edit]

Jane Espenson: Espenson. Welcome to my podcast for the Season 4 webisodes The Face of the Enemy. These were co-written by me along with Kevin Fahey also known as Seamus Fahey. One of the other writers on Battlestar Galactica. I should point out these episodes were his idea. It was- we all enjoyed the original webisodes that were written by David Weddle and Bradley Thompson and Kevin had the idea that we would do another set and he took the idea to Ron Moore and he liked the idea and so the two of us wrote these together. I'm watching them with the sound- with the audio turned down so you're not going to hear my audio, but I will tell you that right now I'm watching the little sequence of images that are Gaeta's memories that also serve us of a preview for what you are going to see in, in the webisodes. It's beautifully cut together. A little chyron just came up three days earlier and we're seeing our beautiful fleet looking very very nice. This was an extremely difficult project for a number of reasons one of which was that we had very limited access to the Battlestar sets. This was being filmed at the same time that the movie was being filmed and so the the sets were being torn down as the movie "The Plan" finished with each set cause the series had been - completed its run. So they were literally coming in with bulldozers and sledgehammers and tearing these sets down. So the scene you just saw uh with Gaeta and Tigh was filmed on a set that was torn down as soon as they were done shooting that. This corridor was also one of the last things that were standing of of Galactica if I recall. There there were really literally by the time we finished the webisodes nothing was left but but the little Raptor on which we were filming this. This decision to make Gaeta and Hoshi a couple is one that I’m very pleased with. I think it plays very well. It was Wayne Rose who directed these who did this fantastic job and he was the one who in a production meeting as we were- we already had the script- we were all ready to begin shooting and he pointed out that he was having a very hard time scheduling these scenes because we were spending so much time on that one set: the Raptor, and and wouldn’t it be interesting if we could cut back to some other location and he suggested that what if someone were out looking for Gaeta and that made my wheels turn and the first thought was that we could cut to a Viper in which Narcho would be looking for him. Narcho’s one of our established pilots, and I thought that would be an interesting couple if: Gaeta and Narcho. That ended up- we couldn’t get Narcho, and we ended up uh going with Hoshi which means of course we were still cutting to from a Raptor to another Raptor, but at that point we had- we were committed to the idea and I loved the job that Hoshi did I have no regrets that we lost Narcho. I think either either combination would have worked well but in terms of story-telling for Season 4 this actually worked out better, and I think Hoshi does a fantastic job. I could not ask for better. Looking here at our two Eights, these in script these are Pilot Eight and Sweet Eight and in a production meeting I suggested that maybe the makeup team could do a slightly different effect uh with Sweet Eight’s makeup than they were doing with Pilot Eight’s to sort of emphasize the softness of one character and the hardness of the other and everyone sort of laughed and said: “With Grace Park, you do not need to do that. That you will be able to see from just the way she holds her face which character she’s playing.” And and it is true. It- everyone commented on it. It’s absolutely true. That you can just- she just makes her face sweeter or harder or whatever. She’s really really incredible. I’m very please. That was the end of Webisode 1. Where is the fleet?

Episode 2[edit]

Webisode 2. Here we go. By the way these were not written as a thirty page script in which I artificially went through later and put in the act breaks. These were written as ten little scripts as the ten little webisodes. So each of these act breaks was sort of agonized over from the earlier stages to give you a satisfying act break-type feel every three pages which is a challenge. You write a very different story depending on the number of act breaks- the number of times you have to turn your story. This is one of the reasons that I don't like the fact that many- most hour long dramas have gone to six acts instead of the traditional four. More act breaks means your story has to turn. More often you end up with a very different type story. Part of the thing that gives these webisodes a different feel than a similar thirty minute chunk of regular Battlestar is because the storytelling is different when you have so many act breaks. So you know write your congressman tell him you want four acts in your hour long drama but for webisodes this works very well with these little three minute chunks. They’re wearing- some of the characters here you’ll see Finn and Esrin wearing the helmets and I was against originally using the helmets in so many scenes and having Finn and Esrin in their helmets for so much of the story because I feared that it would- these are new characters we don’t know them very well to obscure so much of their face I thought would be confusing or at least you know hard to watch but in fact those helmets are so fantastic and so beautifully lit that once I saw how they looked I had no hesitation to. Well, put a helmet on all of them! They look fantastic. Here’s Hoshi again doing a fine job. This originally all these scenes back on Galactica were going to be with Admiral Adama instead of with Colonel Tigh with Michael Hogan here but we couldn’t get him because he was busy directing and acting in the movie which is I say was shooting at the same time. So it was a question of who we had available and thank goodness! We had Colonel Tigh, our other authority figure and he does- Michael does a fantastic job here. The characters of Finn and Esrin and Brooks who are three new characters- there’s Finn- on the ship. That was an interesting thing. We didn’t have time to do a separate casting session for all of these characters but we were very fortunate that we had just cast a number of roles in the movie "The Plan" which I also was producing at the same time so we had audition tapes left over from the role of the Coach and the role of two of the Pyramid players from that movie. So I was able to go back and look at the tapes and pick three actors who hadn’t been cast in the movie but who would be right for these roles and this is- that’s how we got Finn and Brooks and Esrin and they’re very good. It makes me feel confident that even if we had made different decisions casting the movie we would have ended up with very good actors.

Episode 3[edit]

Here we go with Webisode 3. Webisodes 1, 2, and 3 and the three at the other end 7- before here- 7, 8, 9, 10 were the ones that changed the least in the rewrite process. It was those ones in the middle 4 5 6 that I found myself rewriting many many many times during leading right up to when production started. There was just for some reason I think that's a natural thing went in a script is that the beginning and the ending are sort of like you know they're tied to the hammock posts; the middle is where it gets saggy (laughs) and you have to go in and do more work there but we got it in shape. These webisodes before even we got to that stage of rewriting there was a huge amount of rewriting from the very beginning. First off we had to find our story and then we had to find out which cast members we had and at first, our first thought was that we would have both Trish and Grace. We would have both a number Six Cylon and a number Eight and the webisodes were broken and written with that in mind. Kevin made a first pass through and then I did rewriting of him and we worked together to find that original shape for our original script and it was- by the end of those webisodes- by webisode 7 or 8 of that original configuration the characters who were left alive on the ship were the two Cylons: the Six and the Eight and Gaeta and there was a whole webisode in which Gaeta was asleep and it was just Six and Eight talking about the murders they had committed on board and it was very interesting version of the script and it was very- it was less of- it had less of a horror movie feel than this current version does but it had- it was much more cerebral and a little slower maybe. It was very good and we were really excited about it and that was my favorite chapter was that webisode 8 where the two of them just talked. When we realized that we didn't have both actresses, at first we thought we just- we were going to have two Sixes. Later on, we realized we didn't have Trish; we did have Grace; we had two Eights.

Episode 4[edit]

-so in occasion a heck of a lot of rewriting and because it’s so time-consuming that it wasn’t so much the expense as it was the time-consuming nature of having an actress play opposite herself. We realized that the script was going to have to have- the story was going have to lay out very differently. We weren’t going to be able to spend a whole webisode with the character talking to another one of the same model. It would simply be too difficult. So we made it- when we ended up having two Eights in this final version. We also realized that we had to do another rewrite to make the other Eight- the Pilot Eight be the first character killed. Again for the same reason that we simply couldn’t afford to have- couldn’t afford the time to have two Eights on screen for so much of the production. So that’s why she’s killed first. In retrospect, thank goodness! Because it makes the mystery so much more interesting and so much more initially opaque to have the Cylon as the first one dead. It helps throw suspicion away from our Sweet Eight here which is crucial to the story. This notion of the electrocution was one of the first things that Kevin and I talked about when we started plotting out our series- our series of webisodes because we had to come up with plausible ways for people to die on a Raptor and that was one of the first ones we thought of was the idea of someone trying to fix it and jabbing some metal instrument down in there and getting electrocuted and of course we had to find out if that was actually possible. This list of names that he is writing- you’ll see it- some of those names: Stacy Fish, Wayne Rose- if you’re familiar with our production, you’ll recognize those as names of people on our crew. No names got officially cleared for use so when they actually had to start making this list there weren’t any names that they were allowed to use unless they used crew member names. I don’t know if crew member names are automatically cleared or if they’re simply the assumption that the people on the crew won’t sue their own production. If we were just going on that, I hope we were right. I wasn’t able to be here for a lot of the filming of this because I was off on the set of the movie shooting at the same time so I actually didn’t see any of the things that were in the tent on New Caprica and I didn’t get to see any of the material with Brad- with our Hoshi- and I’m very sorry for that because that’s some of my favorite material is the stuff in the tent and the stuff here with Hoshi and Racetrack in the other Raptor. I think that is some of the most effective stuff and Wayne was absolutely right- it was very valuable to have a location to cut to away from our hero Raptor.
