Welcome[edit]

Welcome to the wiki! Thanks for the help on the Battlestar Wiki:Podcast Transcripts! That's an area we are falling behind on (because they just keep making more of them). I'll get on verifying it ASAP. Oh. And this wouldn't be an official greeting without the obligatory Standards and Conventions link. It appears that you already know how to datestamp(~~~~), and you are welcome to edit your user page to tell us more about you.--Steelviper 15:12, 14 February 2006 (EST)

A belated welcome to you as well, Misco. While I'm sure it's not the case, it does sometimes seem that our wiki here is all too dominately male in terms of contributors or insight, so it's nice to know of someone with a feminine perspective on things, and is British to boot. :) --Spencerian 08:55, 17 August 2006 (CDT)

Transcription Technique[edit]

Are you actually able to transcribe real-time? (That is to say, type it out as fast as the audio goes.) The few errors I catch are because I have to listen to each section two or three times, so I get the nitpicky stuff that I would have missed if I could keep up with the audio. Either way, it's amazing work. (And it appears to have inspired others to pitch in again, as well.) --Steelviper 23:45, 14 February 2006 (EST)

Haha, I wish... I never even learned to type 'properly'! I'm sure there are more than a few errors, every now and then I come across a word or a phrase that I can't quite make out so I just take my best guess. Thanks for the compliment anyway, although I'm sure you're just being nice. Also it's always nice to be an inspiration! --Misco 00:53, 15 February 2006 (EST)
Well, diffs don't lie. That's some pretty minor stuff. As for "proper" typing... I think it's over-rated anyway. I'm definitely an "ends justify the means" guy when it comes to typing, but that may be due to a lack of formal training myself. I'd actually love to learn to use a Dvorak or some other "optimized" keyboard layout, but I fear I would be lost if I sat down at any other keyboard after that. Well... back to work. --Steelviper 08:56, 15 February 2006 (EST)

Misco, you are insane. And fantastic. --April Arcus 22:28, 15 February 2006 (EST)

Well, I'm not going to argue with that. ;) --Misco 03:48, 16 February 2006 (EST)

Epiphanies Complete[edit]

Hooray! Thanks for finishing epiphanies! (See? People really do read it.) Between you and Laineylain, more is getting done in the transcript department than had been done since it has existed. Thanks!--Steelviper 07:37, 14 March 2006 (CST)

Thanks for saying erm...thanks! :) I would have finished it earlier but I got behind on watching the BSG episodes (technical difficulties) and I didn't dare come near the site for fear of spoilers! But now I'm all caught up so hopefully the transcripts on this site will be up to date by the time BSG comes back on and more podcasts start getting made. October... *sigh* --Misco 14:07, 14 March 2006 (CST)

LJ And Other Things[edit]

Woohoo, Misco! How awesome is it that we found each other on the LiveJournal battlestar_blog community yesterday? Small world :) P.S. I think you're the only other female I've seen here. LOL -- Laineylain 10:57, 14 March 2006 (CST)

I know I was so surprised! I hadn't been here for nearly a month (as I said above in the reply to Steelviper) and didn't realise there was a new transcriber. Anyway as soon as I realised I just had to 'friend' you! ;) And I love the battlestar_blog community too, in fact I think I've become slightly addicted! Are we the only two girls? Haha, that's great. --Misco 14:19, 14 March 2006 (CST)

Verification[edit]

Thanks for the verification (and welcome back)! It's always encouraging to know that at least one other person has read over it carefully. --Steelviper 11:10, 14 July 2006 (CDT)

Your transcription was pretty much perfect. You should transcribe more! And I'm glad to be back - I'm gonna try and finish Colonial Day this week - sorry I disappeared for a while but RL sometimes just gets in the way. --Misco 11:21, 14 July 2006 (CDT)
I understand. Hopefully Lainey will return too! Also, you may want to try using the (free) program that's linked at the top of the Transcripts Project page. It allows you to control playback speed (I do most of my work at 60%, then one quick run-through at 100% when I'm double checking) and remembers where you left off. --Steelviper 11:42, 14 July 2006 (CDT)

Female user pic[edit]

There's no rule against it, but yours is the first female contributor user pic posted here. Don't be surprised if you end up in a future group photo. If you're interested I also do individual BSG portraits if you have a favorite character (or character type).--Steelviper 14:38, 16 August 2006 (CDT)

Oh, I'm a pioneer. ;) Hopefully I won't be the last. I'm more than happy to be put in a group photo, the one you linked to was great. As far as an individual BSG portrait goes, thanks, I'd love one! I like all the female characters / the jobs they do, so I'll leave it to your discretion what you 'cast' me as. --Misco 14:55, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
First rough draft <image deleted>. I'll continue tomorrow. (It's a group pic so I may try to figure out some other people to get in as well.) --Steelviper 15:50, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
Aww that's brilliant. Thank you so much. Looking forward to seeing the final finished group picture if you decide to do that. :) --Misco 05:03, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
Portrait and Full BSG shot. I haven't worked in any other BSG wiki folks. I tried getting Mercifull in, with that UK connection, but the only pic I had handy was NOT working. I may try to work some other people into the shot, but in the meantime you'll have to settle for Jamie Bamber and Grace Park. --Steelviper 08:25, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
"Group" with Mercifull. I went through his Flikr account and found a better pic. --Steelviper 08:55, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
Ahh, that's great. I'm now officially a member of the crew! :D --Misco 09:38, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
Also nice to see a photo to a name. :) Welcome! :) --Shane (T - C - E) 14:40, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
Thanks for the welcome. :) I agree it's nice to see what people really look like. I meant to put an image up ages ago but was suffering from a severe lack of pictures of myself.--Misco 14:55, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
Indeed, another welcome from someone else, this time though, in the same country. And be careful, with pictures like that and a shared interest in BSG, you may get geek stalkers! Hi, have you met me yet? :P --Fordsierra4x4 15:24, 16 August 2006 (CDT)
Hello there fellow UKer! I'm more than happy to get 'geek stalkers' as you put it, my inner geek adores them. ;) --Misco 05:03, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
Oh you have no idea what you've just opened yourself up for *evil grin* ;) --Fordsierra4x4 11:16, 17 August 2006 (CDT)

Thanks for your support of BSG: you have no idea how hard I'm struggling to make BSG have a..."more respectable" fanbase....keep in mind that this is based on years of indignity in Star Trek fandom: by the end of Voyager and Enterprise it was mostly "middle aged guys living in their parents basements" watching because they inserted Space Babes like Seven of Nine and T'Pol in, and the production team would just dismiss fan complaints by saying "who cares what fans think? They're just middle aged FanBoys" etc. ---->BSG is really breaking new ground and people that don't normally watch Scifi are watching BSG, i.e. my sister and all of her college friends (their college is near mine) I converted into avid BSG fans, and on the bboards actually a lot of women and actually "hip young people" are contributing. Oh, I won't repeat my usual "Cally is great because she's a girl and my age and a character" (I think you've all heard it already), but stuff like that. But it's really that I was so annoyed that fans were getting dismissed as "middle aged fanboys" that I like it when we break the stereotype of what a "fan" is; (I myself am 20 and was on my high school varsity football team, so I don't look like the sterotypical "gawky nerdy fanboy"; I'm more of a militant Che Gueverra-esque "Geek Power!" fellow :) --->Btw, it was funny: Richard Hatch came to a convention I went to, and I think for like 20 years he's had to deal with the "middle-aged living in parent's basement" types of fans, and when I went I brought along my sister and her 2 college-aged friends, and we all dressed up in Battlestar pilot flight suits, and Hatch was just extatic :) --The Merovingian (C - E) 17:01, 16 August 2006 (CDT)

I understand what you mean. I myself really hate the stereotype that shows like Trek have to suffer when it comes to what their fans are like. While I'm sure that there are a portion of 'middle-aged geeks living in their parent's basements' who are avid supporters, that is certainly not by any means the only person who would like a science-fiction show. Or, in any case, could like a science-fiction show if people would only give something different a chance.
I have to admit that one of the reasons why I never bothered giving Enterprise much of a chance was because of the whole T'Pol thing and I didn't want to get attached to a programme just for it to turn into The Seven of Nine Show like Voyager did in the end. And it's not that I have some objection to beautiful women in revealing clothes being a part of science fiction, I loved Farscape more than I can say and that has its fair share and of course I adore BSG's Six - I only object when it reaches the point that the show seems to be about nothing else.
I agree that BSG is not your typical science-fiction show, I mean for one thing there is a lot less technobabble and the whole political element isn't sci-fi at all really. I feel much happier recommending BSG to people to watch than I would other science fiction shows just because of that and I know that a big part of that is the stereotype people have and so with other shows I immediately think well they would never give 'this' or 'that' a chance - so what's the point.
Another thing I don't understand is why this stereotype is still around today, there seem to be a lot of women who contribute on forums, and write fan-fiction about the show etc etc. So surely the reaction people have to what a science fiction fan should look/act like must be changing. And I guess it is... but extremely slowly because there were a lot of women who liked Voyager and a lot of women who liked Farscape (to name two shows I loved) but you wouldn't know it as far as the way people talk about science-fiction fandom goes. I myself, once went to a convention type thing and I have to say, I don't think that there were that many more men there than women, of course they could have just been the guy's sisters or girlfriends - but then I didn't think geeks who lived in their parent's basements had girlfriends. ;) --Misco 05:03, 17 August 2006 (CDT)
Yeah: Farscape was great because while there was a lot of sex in it, it was A) handled maturely B) people had sex on the show because it was part of the actual plot, not because they were obviously trying to get higher ratings. Of course I always just thought Scorpius was a cool bad guy (because he was evil, but also kind of a gray character and not one dimensional); "Entropy will claim the universe, before I bow down to a Scarran!", "Why must you make me demonstrate my superiority...over your kind as well?!?!?"...love those, try to insert them into conversation :)
As for T'Pol on Enterprise, the sole thing I was happy about was that even the actress *playing* T'Pol complained about that. While with Seven of Nine, Jeri Ryan defended the character, with T'Pol actress Jolene Blalock complained about how the character was getting completly subverted and turned into a blatant sex object....and as this got actually PROGRESSIVELY WORSE, she would complain even mor, to the point that by late Season 3 she was practically warring with the executive producers...though they always won out, but both fans and critics agreed with everything Blalock was saying ("you make me get naked for no reason, just for ratings", "you make my character have sex with people for no pre-established reason", "the dialogue is poor and the scripts are amateurish or recycled", etc.
Lots of girl fans at the conventions (I didn't specify; my sister's squad of 3-4 other fans are all girls too); they're great at making fan costumes, which I have no idea how to do. --The Merovingian (C - E) 11:21, 17 August 2006 (CDT)

Updates[edit]

Any new news on the Misco front? Noticed you been silent like me lately :) --Fordsierra4x4 23:35, 14 November 2006 (CST)
