Caprica is a large blue-green planet, similar to Earth. Its largest population center is Caprica City, which serves as the seat of all three branches of the Colonial Government. Caprica City is surrounded by other small towns and hamlets, such as Oasis. Thus far, Caprica is the only planet of the Twelve Colonies that viewers have seen directly. The episode opening credits show Caprica City, as well as the nuclear bombing of the planet.

Other major cities included Delphi, famous for the Delphi Museum of the Colonies and also home to a large spaceport. After the Cylon attack, the resistance cell lead by Samuel Anders operated out of Delphi.

Caprica is known for its fine Caprican cloth (from which Dr. Gaius Baltar wears), fumarella leaf (used for cigar smoking), and art.

Re-imagined Universe

In the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, the twelve colonies were originally located on a single world - Kobol (early draft of the Mini-Series script). However, this was later revised to twelve separate worlds, in keeping with the original concept.

It is unclear whether all twelve colonies are orbiting a single star or not, or what the name of this star might be. However, the 2003 Video Game proposed the home system for the twelve colonies is called Cyrannus. This has yet to be accepted as canon in the new television series.

Their names are references to the Greek Zodiac. See the Zodiac article on Wikipedia.

Origins

The Twelve Colonies were introduced in the original Battlestar Galactica. They were located in an unnamed multi-star system within the Cyranus Galaxy, and had been at war with the alien Cylons for 1,000 yahrens (years).

The original Twelve colonies included:
