It was the largest city on Caprica, and the civil administration centre for the planet and Twelve Colonies as a whole, home to the exectuive, legislative and judicial branches of government. It was also home to the Colonial Defense Mainframe.

It was completely depopulated by a Cylon nuclear detonation in the Cylon attack and occupied by Cylon forces, who established a military presence and disposed of the human corpses left behind. Its buildings and infrastructure were left mostly intact.
