New Zealand Broadcast Update

Hi all,

Just to let you know that TV3 are NOT going to continue onto Season Three when Season Two finishes, so they will finish broadcasting on October 9th.

Also, I spotted yesterday that New Zealand's satellite broadcaster Sky TV have started reruns of Season One on their Sky One channel. On Friday October 12 they will be playing ep103 'Bastille Day' at 8.30pm. This episode also repeats a few hours later at 3am Saturday morning.

Will let you know when I know about the DVD release for S3, which should be sometime in December (either that or will be in late November, as that's when Australia gets it).

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that. Anyway, thank you for keeping us appraised. :) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 14:48, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

Item of interest

Did some Googlin'. Regarding Pooh the hat... he's apparently been blocked on Wikipedia for, uhm, some interesting contributions. A lot of it has to do with a fascination for grabbing male genitalia with either the hand or rubbing the area with the foot (which explains the edits to Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down and Lee Adama), disturbingly enough.

I'd say we go ahead and block the user, because I don't see him understanding how to constructively contribute here. Thoughts? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 12:11, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Mhh interesting. I did of course notice the spamming and vandalism and while I had the urge to get out the banhammer, I didn't want to do so at first sight. You probably saw my two-stage warning on his user page. But considering your research, we seem to have a professional troll at our hands. --Serenity 12:31, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
w:User:Liempt put it very well:
While I'm sure you are avid about what you would do someone's genitals,
you have to consider before you add content whether or not the addition contributes positively to the whole of Wikipedia's knowledge.
I say we give him one last warning: stop your vandalism or be blocked. The Template:Warn-4 treatment, in other words. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 12:47, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
That's fine by me. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 12:56, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
You get the honor ;) --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 12:58, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
Nuke 'em from orbit if necessary. It's the only way to be sure. ;) --Spencerian 15:39, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
I hear that. :) --Talos 18:50, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Icon Issues

Icons are showing up in the lower left for me (all the way at the bottom). Basically all icons (TOS, FA, SOK, etc). I'm using the monobook skin. --Steelviper 21:52, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

Ah... Shane didn't update that skin with the needed CSS changes. Sssshhhhhaaaaannnneeeeee! -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 21:57, 9 October 2007 (CDT)
I blame work. :) Shane (T - C - E) 00:21, 10 October 2007 (CDT)
In which browser did this happen? My TOS icons show up just fine in Firefox 2.0.0.7. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 07:54, 10 October 2007 (CDT)
Right, me too. However, I'm running the monobook skin (in part to catch stuff like that). It works fine for me with the default skin. --Steelviper 22:48, 10 October 2007 (CDT)
I believe I've nabbed the issues with the icons. (Simple copy and paste job; I copied the styles from bsgbook and pasted them into bsgmonobook.) Try it now. ;-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 03:35, 11 October 2007 (CDT)
Joe FTW! It took a hard refresh, but it's working. --Steelviper 04:43, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

Region 2 Germany box sets labels

Region 2 Germany season 2 DVDs came in two sets. Season 2.1 and Season 2.2 Never did find the whole set of season 2 in one box. Just thought you might like to note the labeling of the sets as 2.1 and 2.2 Your listing of DVD sets chart for the regions does not reflect this labeling. I know because I was very confused when I tried to find the 2.5 set and couldn't.

Hope this is the right place for this. If not, sorry. If you don't care about this labeling difference...sorry again. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ficklebee (talk • contribs).

Interesting. Definitely worth noting. Have any links for these box sets? Thanks for the heads up ... and of course we care! LOL -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 15:01, 11 October 2007 (CDT)
We only cover English-language releases here. The US set is indeed called 2.0 and 2.5; probably because they wanted to go for a computer/tech feeling. Even the Aussie set still has "2.5" on the cover even though it's the complete season (for just ~23€ btw). If you want info on german DVDs check the german wiki which should reflect the local labeling, though I really don't know. --Serenity 15:03, 11 October 2007 (CDT)
Hmm, doesn't seem to cover any DVDs at all... --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:31, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

New Zealand Season 3 DVD Release Date Announced

FYI, Season Three on DVD will be released in NZ on November 21, on the same day as in Australia. The 5-disc set will be identical to the Australian version (and I believe the UK Region 2 version) and have no extras. It will retail for NZ$59.95 (US$45) and come in the now-standard slimline (12mm wide, same as single disc) case. Triton 15:56, 4 November 2007 (CST)

Xbox 360 BSG Game

How can someone submit you guys some news without making an article about it? You might remember some comments a year or so ago about a BSG game coming to the XBox 360, and It's out now. Thought that might be newsworthy. o.O —The preceding unsigned comment was added by ShinRa Actual (talk • contribs).

Welcome to the Wiki! :-) We actually have an article on the 360 video game. The article is located here. You can add information to it by clicking the edit button and adding what you want to add. :-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 00:54, 11 November 2007 (CST)

Upload by URL

Could uploading by URL (i.e. uploading a picture from another web site rather than from one's hard drive) be enabled for sysops on the media repository? Also, could I be promoted to sysop status there? To enable upload by URL, add the following line to LocalSettings.php:

$wgGroupPermissions['sysop']['upload_by_url'] = true;

--Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:00, 15 November 2007 (CST)

Ok, I've made it so that regular users can upload via URL. This should make uploading promo images and the like easier, and I don't imagine that it will be misused. Anyway, I've promoted you to sysop status over there as well. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 09:14, 15 November 2007 (CST)
Thanks. I also don't think it'll be abused a lot, as any abusers will have to create an account anyway. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:17, 15 November 2007 (CST)

A Call to Arms

I know that Battlestar Wiki, as an entity, is going to remain neutral in the WGA conflict. However, I just wanted to bring this thread at fans4writers to your attention. Basically Mrs. Ron is concerned with the (lack of) numbers the site is getting. So if the WGA strike is something that you're interested in or are passionate about, I'd encourage you to go ahead and sign up over there and get active. The studios (and Mrs. Ron) can't see you if you're lurking in the shadows, you have to step out into the light and make sure your voice is heard. --Steelviper 10:10, 19 November 2007 (CST)

Any chance we could show banners promoting the WGA strike here, or would that conflict with our neutrality? The advertisers could pay per click, and we could uphold our neutrality saying we'd also accept anti-strike banners, IMO. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 10:34, 19 November 2007 (CST)
This is walking a very fine line. At that point, we may as well say that we're supporting the WGA strike as an entity and eschew our neutrality. Now if "they" (whoever they are) paid, then that might be a different story. But I don't feel comfortable in taking people's money to promote an opinion regarding the strike, either. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 11:44, 19 November 2007 (CST)
I kind of expected this answer. I guess our actions are gonna be limited to recruiting from BSWiki's user base, then. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:46, 19 November 2007 (CST)
I don't see why we're officially staying neutral on the strike issue... is there a discussion somewhere that I missed? --BklynBruzer 09:52, 20 November 2007 (CST)
Yes. Basically, we don't want NBC/Universal to shut us down over this issue. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:53, 20 November 2007 (CST)

New users

I'm thinking, a lot of users join up, and then the majority never edit anything. Are we sure we're not scaring people off by very quick "Welcome to the Battlestar Wiki!" message everyone gets? Perhaps we could trial a week or two where we don't use this and see what happens, or reconsider its content? OTW 17:49, 23 November 2007 (CST)

A greeting from Spencerian (albeit much briefer) when I first started was one of the things that kept me around. I'd be surprised if it made much of an impact either way, but I'd be willing to try an experiment. However, getting the message out to everybody not to greet newcomers might be awkward, and if you didn't get the word out you'd still have people getting greeted. --Steelviper 20:02, 23 November 2007 (CST)
We can try to create alternate welcome messages, see which of them is more effective. Or we can try short, informative messages in lieu of our normal one. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 22:22, 23 November 2007 (CST)
Perhaps an adjustment to the message would be appropriate. Something like...
"Thanks for creating an account on the Battlestar Wiki! With a user account, you can, if you wish, now create or edit almost all of the articles on the wiki. You aren't obligated to edit or comment...if you liked to "lurk" in the background before, you can still do so. However, with a user account, Battlestar Wiki works better when you do correct, add new information, vote on matters, and generally speak out. The community, in return, can speak back to you."
We can amend the existing greeting around it. I think the current greeting is good in the sense that it leaves little out as far as the essential information needed to contribute to this wiki (as opposed to others). But brevity should always be considered. Thoughts? --Spencerian 00:56, 24 November 2007 (CST)
Maybe we need to ease up a bit one the rules. Right now it's like "Please don't do this and that and especially not this. Oh and read our rules about this and that, which is very important". That might scare some people. Usually we make immediate style edits anyways.
We could create one help page with further links for this (basically what's in the message now) and then have just one link to "Tips for starting" in the welcome text. --Serenity 07:23, 24 November 2007 (CST)
Yes. The current message spawned over time because our help pages weren't as developed (or existed). Now they are. We can put in essential links and keep it shorter. I'll try my hand at one here shortly for review here for everyone based on our current help and tutorial pages. One or two reminders should remain in the greeting, however. --Spencerian 07:58, 24 November 2007 (CST)

Variant #1

Here's a version that I've worked on:

Greetings, [username], and welcome to Battlestar Wiki! I hope you enjoy your stay with us and am looking forward to your contributions to the Wiki!
As you may already know, Battlestar Wiki covers all the Battlestar Galactica series from past to present, in addition to authorized merchandise. Presently, we don't cover fan fiction, but our sister-site, Battlestar Pegasus (which will soon open) shall do so. We're also not really a discussion site, but we do have an ever growing Battlestar Forum where people can discuss the various shows and non-BSG topics as well!
To get started on the wiki, we suggest that you check out our tutorial, experiment in the sandbox (a test editing area for those learning wiki code), and review some of our basic policies.
Of course, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you are more than welcome to bring them up at the Chiefs' noticeboard (which is frequented by the administrators of the Wiki) and at the Galactipedian's Quorum (which is the hub for contributors, who are called "Galactipedians").
Furthermore, if you don't wish to see the ads, then please consider upgrading your account to a paid membership, which costs only $10 USD a year and helps support the wiki financially.
Thank you for joining us! Hope to see you soon!

Thoughts? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 13:50, 25 November 2007 (CST)

We hope you enjoy your stay with us and look forward to your contributions
This is ambiguous. Who's looking forward to the newbie's contributions? "We" or "you"? It can be interpreted either way. The sentence should be disambiguated by adding "we": "and we look forward to your contributions".
</nitpicking> Looking good, definitely less scary than the current template. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 08:47, 26 November 2007 (CST)
Ok, I've reworded it. ;-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 08:57, 26 November 2007 (CST)
I for one love this new greeting. Although I did like the part in the old greeting that asked them to start a user page. So is this complete? Can we start using it now? --OrionFour 19:33, 26 November 2007 (CST)
The new greeting's quite less bloated. This Concision Fairy approves. I recommend, however, to change the following as such: "To get started on the wiki, we suggest that you check out our tutorial, experiment in the sandbox (a test editing area for those learning wiki code), and review some of our basic policies (which have important differences from other SF wikis)." --Spencerian 21:47, 26 November 2007 (CST)
Awesome. Added that. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 00:33, 27 November 2007 (CST)

The greeting is has replaced the old one. Feel free to use it! ;-) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 00:33, 27 November 2007 (CST)

Battlestar Wiki on Wikipedia

I just wanted to point out, that as of only four days ago, Battlestar Wiki now has a place on Wikipedia, up there with the ranks of Memory Alpha and Wookieepedia! I added our great name to the official Wikipedia List of wikis just now. --OrionFour 02:00, 25 November 2007 (CST)

Good times. The article needs some work, though, from the look of it. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 02:09, 25 November 2007 (CST)
Yeah it's definitely in its infancy. According the box on the right, your last name is Beaudion. --OrionFour 02:27, 25 November 2007 (CST)
ROFL! It could be worse, I suppose. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 02:32, 25 November 2007 (CST)
That must be in error on the about page. :O Shane (T - C - E) 21:30, 26 November 2007 (CST)
There was an article before, but their policies on what Wikipedia considered "important" back then caused its deletion. Maybe we're important enough for the article to stay now. (/sarcasm). --Spencerian 21:49, 26 November 2007 (CST)

Wikipedia Template?

I've noticed for various television show episodes (the one example that I could find off-hand was the Template:TardisIndexFile for The TARDIS Index File), they include a template/link over to their corresponding wiki. I don't see why not. :) -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 00:41, 27 November 2007 (CST)

Naming Violation

I was referred here due to the naming policy violation. I'm not promoting any fan fiction or website, I had the username Pacifica previously, due to the fact that I live near Pacifica, CA. But that's neither here nor there. Please delete this account if it's offensive. Thank you. --Battlestar Pacifica 22:08, 26 November 2007 (CST)

Hi! We don't want to delete your account! We just need to rename it. Could you give us another name you'd like to use? We just want to avoid confusion and keep clear of conflicts of interest with other fans. (It was a nice idea for a name, though.) --Spencerian 22:21, 26 November 2007 (CST)
