Welcome, newcomers and baffled oldtimers! If you have a question about Battlestar Wiki and how it works, please place it at the bottom of the list, and someone will attempt to answer it for you. (If you have a question about life, the universe and everything, go to the reference desk instead.)

Before asking a question, check if it's answered by the Battlestar Wiki:FAQ or other pages linked from Battlestar Wiki:Help.

Before answering a newcomer's question abruptly, consider rereading Please do not bite the newcomers.

Questions and answers will not remain on this page indefinitely (otherwise it would very soon become too long to be editable). After a period of time with no further activity, information will be moved to other relevant sections of Battlestar Wiki (such as the FAQ pages) or placed in one of the Wikipedian Quorum archives if it is of general interest, or deleted. Please consider dating and titling your discussions so as to facilitate this.

Semi-automated pipe sort -> DEFAULTSORT conversion

Read this. We could use this as well, as almost all of our articles still use piped sorting. The script could work either on an allpages basis (listing all pages which use piped sort), on a template basis (listing all pages that transclude Template:Cast Data, Template:Crew Data and Template:Character Data and use piped sort), or on a category basis (listing all pages in that use piped sort, requires MediaWiki 1.11alpha). I think the category approach is probably best, but it does require an upgrade to 1.11alpha (see here for how to download that). If we can't (or won't) upgrade, we can also just use the allpages thing on the main namespace only.

Mind you: all this 'bot' will do is make a list of pages that use piped sort rather than DEFAULTSORT. Updating these pages to use DEFAULTSORT is still our job, which means we'll have to enlist some volunteers if we're gonna do this.

Mind you 2: we can also use my script to count the pages that use piped sorting, so we can decide whether we want to do this with the numbers in mind.

Note: if you don't understand what this is about, read the snippet below, then re-read my post.

<!-- This is piped sorting syntax -->

<!-- With DEFAULTSORT syntax, this would become: -->
Adama, Lee

It appears someone has already written a bot to do this. Maybe we could run it some time. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 06:16, 19 June 2007 (CDT)
To be honest, if we have to upgrade to 1.11, I would like to see it out of alpha and beta status before we roll it out here. As it stands now, the use of DEFAULTSORT vs piped sorting isn't a big hairy issue, as the categories at least have a sortkey of some type. So we can always hold off on that. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 08:27, 19 June 2007 (CDT)
