Overview

Summary

Part two of a two-part season finale. The election campaign comes to a close and Baltar is the apparent winner. Unsatisfied with the outcome, Roslin conspires with Col. Tigh and Dualla to rig the election result to keep him out of power. When Kara, Sharon and Helo return from their rescue mission with Anders and his resistance fighters, Chief Tyrol is shocked to find that one of the people to step off a Raptor is Brother Cavil, the priest who just helped him with his spiritual troubles. Meanwhile Gina and Demand Peace plot to use the nuclear device given to them by Baltar on a horrific target: Cloud Nine.

The season finale, "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II", will be a 90 minute special according to a release from Scifi Channel (which was previously attempted for "Pegasus", but dropped). The Scifi release goes on to describe the episode:

"With the presidential campaigning in full swing, the election's outcome hinges upon a core debate -- whether or not to abandon the search for Earth when the Galactica crew discovers a habitable planet. When the election begins to swing in favor of Baltar (James Callis) -- a man whom Roslin is convinced is a Cylon collaborator -- the incumbent president must decide whether or not to take drastic measures for the greater good.
Things become even further complicated when the Cylons, led by Caprica Six (Tricia Helfer) and Sharon (Grace Park), find the planet and offer humanity a stunning proposal of peace." Gateworld

Bits of News

Yes, Gaius Baltar wins the election for the presidency. Both parties try their hand at stuffing the ballot box, but Tom Zarek's support proves decisive.

Gina, the Six model aboard Pegasus, nukes the luxury cruiser Cloud 9 all Iraq style and joins the great toaster in the sky, or get regenerated, whichever. Roslin says to airlock the Brothers Cavel, of whom there are two on Galactica.

We now jump forward a year. Humanity has settled the new planet they found, while the Pegasus and Galactica are largely abandoned, with Galactica in a state of some disrepair. Baltar is strung out and drinking, while the government is in a shambles. Apollo and Dee are still together and on the Pegasus. But Tyrol and Cally have gotten past the whole thing with him beating the stuffing out of her and breaking her jaw and are living down on the planet and expecting a baby. Helo and Sharon, following what they think is the loss of their child, are not on the best of terms. (We see Hera on the planet with Maya, but she has been renamed Isis.)

Laura Roslin, having lost the election, is back to her old job as a teacher. And, though it may pain some readers to hear almost as much as Apollo and Dee still being an item, Starbuck and Anders are not only still together, but are in fact married. But all is not well. Anders is gravely ill, and Kara is frantically looking for medicines. Doc. Cottle tells her there's none to be had.

Meanwhile Caprica Six and Boomer meet with the other Cylons and decide that their plan was a mistake. They aren't human, they are machines. Their second mistake was "following the fleet".

Kara appeals to Lee on the phone, as Pegasus has stockpiles of medicines that Anders needs. But he bitterly turns her down, as she had been less than kind to him and Dee while drunk at one time. At that moment the call gets cut off, as the Cylons come marching in. Gaeta is planetside and wakes up Baltar to tell him the Cylons are here. The Cylons find the planet after they detected the nuke that Gina set off.

Adama and the fleet jumps away, leaving the colonists on the planet stranded and occupied. Kara, Tigh and Roslin are trying to set up a resistance. Roslin also tells Adama that Baltar is working with the Cylons.

Towards the end someone enters Anders' tent and asks for Kara. It's Leoben Conoy.

Last words:

Tyrol: "What do we do now, captain?"
Kara: Same thing we always do. fight them until we can't.

Analysis

Notes

  • Ron Moore's podcast for episode 13, Epiphanies, states that the Nuke given to Gina will come back in this episode, to the benefit of the Cylons.
  • In RDM's podcast for the previous episode, he said that in early drafts of this special 90 minute long episode, the writers actually tried to make it a 2 hour special, but this was soon dropped (these times are including commercials).

Noteworthy Dialogue

Official Statements

Fom the official site (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/): When Baltar wins the vote, Roslin considers stealing the election because she believes he is a Cylon collaborator.
