A pulse generator is a component of a Viper's engines, which permit the ship to obtain fast speeds.
A second pulse generator is added to the Recon Viper called Starchaser in all three of her engines, which makes the ship twice as fast. Consequently, the laser generators had to be removed from the Viper in order to maintain the size of the craft as well as the weight (TOS: "The Long Patrol").
