== Projects ==
Joe,
I think there should be a link to the projects category (located at Category:Project_Page) in the sidebar under projects. If possible, you could even make the projects heading itself a link. The projects are an important part of the wiki, and it should be easier to see all of them at once. Also, I recall there being a specific "dont bite the newbies page" or something similar, but I cannot find it. Am I imaging things? If there isn't, there should be. I'd be happy to write it and stick it under projects. --[[User:Kraetos|Kraetos]] 00:06, 8 February 2006 (EST)
:It's a Wikipedia policy. See [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers|Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers]]. We often defer to Wikipedia policies unless we have a well-articulated reason to disagree with them. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 00:26, 8 February 2006 (EST)
::Thanks Peter. I was lookin for that. --[[User:Kraetos|Kraetos]] 13:30, 8 February 2006 (EST)
: I don't see the purpose in bringin the article over in this Wiki... However, a link to it on an apporpriate page somewhere wouldn't harm anyone. :-) -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 11:00, 8 February 2006 (EST)
:Did you intend for the pages tagged with the Translation template to be included on the projects list? --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 11:09, 8 February 2006 (EST)
::I think you are referring to {{tl|translation}}... In that case, this was unintentional and I have rectified it. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 15:09, 8 February 2006 (EST)
:::Yep. That was it. I was going to throw in some fancy noinclude tags but you've already resolved it. --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 08:56, 9 February 2006 (EST)

Ahem. Sorry 'bout that. I'd like to draw your eye to [[Battlestar Wiki talk:Requested Images#Methods to the Madness|an issue]] you should probably weigh in on. It's not ''that'' kind of issue, so don't get out the User Appriciation Bat just yet. Anyway, when you have a moment... --[[User:Day|Day]] 01:14, 8 February 2006 (EST)

It's back! Maybe now is a good time to start fleshing out [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|this page]] a little bit more. I know some talk of t-shirts were mentioned at the frappr site. --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 11:30, 2 March 2006 (CST)
:Well, it's MOSTLY BACK. I'm getting an error when I view the Recent Changes list. (I do have my recent changes set to group changes by article). Here is the error page that appears when I attempt to open Recent Changes--
::Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 235806 bytes) in home/admin/domains/battlestarwiki.org/public_html/en/includes/ChangesList.php on line 250

Hey Joe, any idea why the thumbnails on new pics aren't working? --[[User:Talos|Talos]] 22:05, 2 March 2006 (CST)

::Cool, thanks. The day the Wiki went down was the day I took about a dozen screen shots identifying several new Vipers, some mistakes, the Cylon Virus breaching Gaeta's firewalls, and a really good close-up of the Lt. Insignia with the flush chevron edges that definately proves it's existence. --[[User:Talos|Talos]]
:::The pics for Vipers 2220, 4267, and 7961 aren't working still. Also, the last two pages aren't listed correctly, they're under the "2" heading instead of the proper 4 and 7. --[[User:Talos|Talos]] 22:36, 2 March 2006 (CST)
::::Those three pages load fine on my end.  If you visited those articles prior to my fix, which happened an hour or so ago, then you may need to do a hard refresh of the page. Also, listing the Vipers under the proper numbers should be as easy as correcting the sort key in the <nowiki>[[Category: Vipers]]</nowiki> syntax. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 22:46, 2 March 2006 (CST)

==Design Improvements==
Just a few minor design improvements.
*1. On the image pages the mime/type text is white font on white background. The text of this or background box colour should be changed in the css to be black. http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4151/bsgdesignimprovements11xv.png
*2. The tiny little logon man perhaps changed to something more relevant, bgs logo or viper insignia http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/2377/bsgdesignimprovements27up.png
*3. Redirect image should be inverted, this is how it look right now http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1546/bsgdesignimprovements30lv.png
* [[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] 08:13, 29 March 2006 (CST)
: When considering design changes, please keep in mind that not everyone reads the site using the default theme. I, for one, find the black background with bright text extraordinarily hard -- downright painful -- on the eyes, particularly in contrast with just about every other program and web site I use. I'm using the straight Monobook theme in my preferences. As a result, there are already some boxes that are all but unreadable unless I highlight the text in them.
: (Ironically, I used to feel just the opposite, but the predominance of white-background websites and GUIs has shifted my preferences. It's easier to go with the flow than to find ways to change every single GUI system I use). --[[User:UncleMikey|Uncle Mikey]] 10:20, 29 March 2006 (CST)
::Would it help on the boxes if we specified the white foreground? Granted, this would go against the rest of the text on the page, but I'd think that it'd make it look closer to how it is intended. However, you still have the blue links (unless that can be specified as well). --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 16:12, 29 March 2006 (CST)
:::Might help. It seems to me that there ought to be some way to make sure that template boxes &c integrate with the theme (using style-sheet names for things, &c), but I haven't messed enough with Mediawiki themes to know exactly how you'd do it portably.--[[User:UncleMikey|Uncle Mikey]] 16:16, 29 March 2006 (CST)
::::You're absolutely right. That would be the correct way to do it. I too, however, lack that [[http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_styles|knowledge]], and so I end up reaching for the quick/easy/ugly hack. Day has mentioned looking into such things in the past. --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 16:25, 29 March 2006 (CST)
:::::I'm pretty good with CSS. I'll look into this, but I don't want to commit to a project I won't have time to see through properly. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 20:52, 29 March 2006 (CST)
:::::: I would feel comfortable commiting to this project, time-wise. I feel confident enough in my CSS skills that I either know or know how to find out anything that would be needed to be done... I just need to remember to email Joe about which files do what and that kind of thing. Then... Do we put the CSS labels in spans and divs in the Wikicode, then? Or somehow mesh it into the XHTML generated by MediaWiki? --[[User:Day|Day]] ([[User talk:Day|talk]]) 01:34, 30 March 2006 (CST)
::::::: I'm not too pro in the likes of CSS but perhaps in the meantime something like the redirect image could be made as a red arrow with a transparent png background then it would ok on both a white and a black background? --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] 03:38, 30 March 2006 (CST)

I got this error message when saving the miniseries page yesterday, what does it mean?
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 37704 bytes) in /home/admin/domains/battlestarwiki.org/public_html/en/languages/LanguageUtf8.php on line 92 --Grafix
: Is it still occuring or is it a one time occurance? -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 20:49, 9 March 2006 (CST)
: This only happened once when I was saving the miniseries page. It could be because this page is too long. I think it could do with splitting up into 2 pages: one for the story and the other for comments. It is also missing a summary. I would be happy to do the split but I would need a summary from somewhere. --[[User:Grafix|Grafix]] 03:08, 10 March 2006 (CST)
::I was able to reproduce this error today. I ran into it on the Recent Changes trying to load all 500 at once. (I wanted to go back and block all the spammer accounts indefinitely). That would point towards a large page issue (as the 250 worked fine). Also, on the Mini-series article... Spencerian had discussed chopping it up earlier, but has never gotten a chance to yet. == Japanese ==
I wanted to ask you about something I noticed.  The people that created the episode guides in other languages had not created their own Episode List in a seperate language.    I saw that you wanted to eventually create seperate wikis in different languages so I was under the impression we should create the articles as seperate as possible.  Should I be creating a list for the episode guides or should I keep them as connected to the main wiki as possible? --Zareck Rocks 18:15, 10 March 2006 (CST)
: When translating the articles, we should try to avoid linking to articles on the "English" Battlestar Wiki. This helps makes the process of moving articles to the separate wiki easier, which is something we are all for. :-) Any other questions? -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 18:21, 10 March 2006 (CST)

==Request for Administratorship==
Joe, I need your help setting up [[Battlestar Wiki:Requests for adminship/The Merovingian]]; I laid the groundwork but I need proper formating and a vote or two (in any category) to start it off; we use these so rarely I'm not sure how to properly set this up.  Then I'm going to fill in all of the questionaires. Thanks,--[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] 15:18, 11 March 2006 (CST)
== Portal's ==
Hey Joe!
I done some research into the "Portal" problem. It seems there is a file, that has this: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:$wgExtraNamespaces where you need to add Portal. It's the same place you did "Battlestar_Wiki". Then you need to run a file under maintenance/namespaceDupes.php to make sure there are no dupes of any type. Since there is possailbly only a few, but do not have any contact it would be ok to run. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] 11:41, 15 March 2006 (CST)
:The IRC Channel for the Wikimeta software wasn't that helpful so that's is much as I can give ya. They said to read the manual, but I am lost in looking for it. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] 15:05, 15 March 2006 (CST)
: I created a namespace for the portal yesterday.  So technically the portal feature is up -- I just am not certain about changing the tab name without changing the name of the article tabs as well. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 06:42, 16 March 2006 (CST)
:: I been working with [[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] trying to figure out the latest problem with portal sub-templates to auto-form and carry over the the design. From what I been talking with the MediaWiki group, the only way for the Portal's to work right is get them to say Portal" where article is. Now we could upgrade to 1.5.7 (fixes some secuirty areas) and then go from there. Now this page http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Custom_namespaces gives me some new info which I never found before. The people in the IRC channel are a real pain. This may or may not fix the sub-portal template problem that we are having. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] 12:44, 16 March 2006 (CST)
::: The problem is they are not becoming "Sub-Pages". When you create something like <nowiki>{{/box-header}}</nowiki> which is why the portal headers arn't working, is that it never became a sub-page. It became it's own page that is not connected to Portal:Characters but is rather Portal:Characters/box-header. Some new revelent information. If you get a chance, I can show you the difference so you can ask the right questions now on the Wiki mailing list. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 11:31, 19 March 2006 (CST)
:::: We think we may have nailed down the problem. '''''For Wikipedia, the User, Talk, and Wikipedia namespaces have subpages turned on; the main (article) namespace does not have this feature turned on'''''. From Matt: looks like Joe may just have to turn on subpages for the Portal namespace. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 18:25, 19 March 2006 (CST)
::::: We are getting closer. I had someone from outside of this wiki take a look. He said that the wiki is blocking certain types of HTML code. I have no idea where the "filters" would be, but if you have any filters for HTML, if you remove them we might be golden. Also, we get this alot: <nowiki>[{{fullurl:{{{editpage|/}}}|action=edit}} edit]</nowiki> during our travels. Somehow fullurl is built into the wiki code on the php side and is not on the template side. So if that can be enabled also that would be perfect. :) --[[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 12:07, 20 March 2006 (CST)

: Your second RfA didn't succeed this time.  (4 for, 2 opposed; 67% were for your adminship -- however, according to [[BW:RFA]] the consensus should be 75%-80% or higher for a successful promotion.) I would recommend waiting a few months or so before proceeding again. Now, as for the issue I debated... I think that recuriting non-contributors to vote wasn't a great idea.  Mainly for the fact that the voters didn't, in my mind, understand ''what'' adminship is.  Apparently, there was the overall consensus amongst these voters that administrators were top-notch contributors to the Wiki and that people are entitled to adminship. This is not adminship.  Adminship isn't for everyone -- and everyone doesn't need admin tools.  If they did, then these administrator folks wouldn't need to exist. At all. We would just call them users with dead man switches. :-)
: Now, if I may kindly suggest a few things, which will only help you on your course to your (eventual) succession to administrator:
:# I would recommend keeping an archive of ''all'' your discussions on your talk page.  You may link to the histories or create subpages on your user page to archive discussions.
:# Realize that, as an admin, your actions will be consistently scrutinized.  Even more so than now.
:# The differences between admins and non-admins: the ability to delete pages, ban people, and protect pages.  That's ''really'' it.  If there are people who believe I am stating this fact lightly, then I recommend talking to another admin -- even [[User:Day|(Super) Mop Boy]] can tell you that there really isn't anything different.  (Other than the two additional tabs on the top. And that "ban" button.)
:Obviously, if you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them. Now I'll be seeing the second new episode of ''The Sopranos''. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 22:28, 19 March 2006 (CST)
:A)I would like to argue against the standard of 80% maximum, it is restrictively high.  Non-editors is a non-issue; I agree with you there.  No, I think I'll commence my next RfA as soon as you close down my current one.  Now I'm going to be a little busy updating the site back up to standards, I might not be able to chat for a while on the subject.
:B)If I were made Administrator, I would be afraid of losing such a title, and thus would have quite obvious reasons for restraining myself.--[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] ([[Special:Contributions/The Merovingian|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/The Merovingian|E]]) 22:37, 19 March 2006 (CST)
:: Merv... an RFA-spam will get old very quickly, and does not show the perspective and calmness required, in my mind, of an admin. Also, one should not say, "If made admin X." One should just show X regardless of adminship. : Merv, a few points:
:# As pointed out by the others, 75%-80% is not a restrictively high standard.  A high standard that is severely restrictive is 95%. This percentage is perfect.  In fact, I wasn't the one who came up with it -- it comes straight from Wikipedia.  And it works, so I'm not going to fix something that is not broken.
:# May I recommend, in the strongest possible terms, that you not proceed to self-nominate yourself again immediately after this RfA is officially closed. (Which I just recently did and the RfA is now archived.) Could you technically do it? Yes.  However, I would be more concerned with how such an action might be perceived by those who would vote.
:# Also, there isn't a rush to recruit new administrators.  Back when I first started the RfA importing process, I did it out of necessity, as I could not do everything at that time. As far as I'm concerned, we have all the admins we need right now -- where we need the admins is for the non-English BSG Wiki's, so they can determine the tempo and do the mop boy (or girl) thing. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 21:22, 20 March 2006 (CST)
== Talk to RDM/Universal? ==
Have you ever considered contacting Ron Moore somehow and offering the wiki as a resource for him and his writers? I think it would be a great idea—have the obsessive fans already take care of the continuity checking and documenting everything that happens in every episode, so I imagine it would be a great resource for the writers to quickly look stuff up and keep track of continuity issues. [[User:Philwelch|Philwelch]] 16:23, 20 March 2006 (CST)
:From my expereince, in Star Trek Community, huge companies don't like to have their staff use nothing but there sources, because it's their source of advertizing. :::If we were offical, that would be nice. We would see a large influx of users if people knew [[Ronald D. :::Officialdom would be a terrible, awful, horrible, no-good, very, very bad idea. Officialdom basically means NBC Universal would control the site and its content, including any critical content. There's no reason to believe we would retain any editorial independence. This site's unofficial status is just fine. Really.--[[User:UncleMikey|Uncle Mikey]] 17:53, 21 March 2006 (CST)

:::::: He needn't contribute. I'm sure he has better things to do with his free time. I mean--BSG is his ''job''. I know very few people who have their job as a hobby as well. However, if he wanted to, we could just cite his username as a source. *wink* I actually don't know how I feel about "selling out" to Universal/RDM/SciFi. Not that I have an inherant distaste for it, but I'd be quite wary of anything that might imply any kind of over-sight by non-contributers/people who don't understand how all this Wiki business works. --[[User:Day|Day]] ([[User talk:Day|talk]]) 20:03, 20 March 2006 (CST)
: I sincerely doubt that we would become "official".  While it would be nice, being "official" is the furthest thing from my mind.  Also, being unofficial does have its advantages -- meaning that we can be a critical as we need to be and we are not tied down by bureaucratic B.S. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 21:13, 20 March 2006 (CST)
::OK, but official status aside, I do think we should let Ron Moore know that we exist. All I'm really asking is that we be an unofficial resource for the writers (if we aren't already!). [[User:Philwelch|Philwelch]] 13:06, 21 March 2006 (CST)
::What makes anyone here think that RDM doesn't know of our existence? Just curious. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] 13:08, 21 March 2006 (CST)
:::I get the sense from his podcasts that they don't have any convenient resource to keep track of continuity. [[User:Philwelch|Philwelch]] 16:18, 21 March 2006 (CST)
:::: They may not feel they need any. RDM has said as much as that he's trying to "make up" for some of the "mistakes" of Trek, but he may not consider Trek's failure to be slavishly continuous a "mistake". If he really did, then he would have/could have gone the route JMS went with ''Babylon 5'', with all the major and many of the minor arcs plotted out before the first frame was shot. He didn't do that. I think he's gone so far as to say he doesn't even know for certain yet if ''Galactica'' will ever find Earth, let alone what state Earth might be in if it did.
:::: In the end, strict continuity is of interest mainly to a relatively small number of die-hard fans. It's not of interest to the general viewing public, who mostly just want to be entertained. It's not necessarily of interest to the writers, to whom strict continuity is often a straitjacket.
:::: I'm not saying that RDM wouldn't appreciate what we do here. I'm just saying that if he really thought such a resource was necessary for the writing team, he knows more than enough fannish geeks who could have created it for him by now :-) --[[User:UncleMikey|Uncle Mikey]] 17:44, 21 March 2006 (CST)

:# Copy that into your "includes" diretory of your MediaWiki install
:# Add the following line to your LocalSettings.php file, near the top:
:#*<tt>require_once( "includes/CharInsert.php" );</tt>
:# Once that's done, save and upload the revised LocalSettings.php file.
:# After that, go to [[MediaWiki:Edittools]]. Copy and paste the code.
:# On your wiki, create a page with the same name. Paste the content and save.
:# After that, edit [[MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning]] on your wiki and insert:
:#* <tt><nowiki>{{MediaWiki:Edittools}}</nowiki></tt>

:::Well Star Wars simply has a greater amount of material.  I  mean it's not just six movies it's an ever expanding book series.  I guarantee it's bigger than anything Star Trek could ever make on an encyclopedia; not a matter of quality, simply in terms of numbers of names, places, events and so forth that make up an encyclopedia.  --[[User:The Merovingian|The Merovingian]] ([[Special:Contributions/The Merovingian|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/The Merovingian|E]])

:The portals are still works in progress. They still don't work quite the way they're expected to, in terms of being able to use the templates to handle most of the formatting. [[Battlestar Wiki:Portals]] has a list of all the portals that are in progress. :I'd propose that we not get too caught up in the implementation details of the portals, and focus more on form, function, and content. The average user probably doesn't care if we have to use html under the covers, as long as the information they want to get to and edit is easy to do so. I'd like to be able to use wiki-code to accomplish everything, but I'd rather move forward in the meantime, with the knowledge that we can always patch back the formatting to wikicode as soon as we figure out how to do so. The top box in [[Portal:Cylons]] is currently hardcoded with html, and provides a better example of how the portal boxes should look. --[[User:Steelviper|Steelviper]] 13:46, 6 April 2006 (CDT)

==Design Improvements==
Just a few minor design improvements.
*<s>1. On the image pages the mime/type text is white font on white background. The text of this or background box colour should be changed in the css to be black. </s>http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4151/bsgdesignimprovements11xv.png

*2. The tiny little logon man perhaps changed to something more relevant, bgs logo or viper insignia http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/2377/bsgdesignimprovements27up.png
*<s>3. Redirect image should be inverted, this is how it look right now </s>http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1546/bsgdesignimprovements30lv.png

== Main Page Redesign (part 2) and other ==
I think we are ready to submit the current design at [[Battlestar Wiki:Main page]] for depolyment on the front page. IF you think it's a go, we just have to create the backend pages on the same "[[Battlestar Wiki:Main page]]" (subpages that would be sysop locked) so we can use those as for the places to edit the information and that is controled.) The only thing that we would have to work on as a community is the Featured Picture and Article process as of the data used right now is jsut a mockup.
The "News" front, even for site news has a new home at [[Battlestar Wiki:News]] so the "Current Events" link would need to be changed.
We wouls still be workong on [[Battlestar Wiki:Main page]] to make the design use CSS so people can switch skinjs between the default and the monobook skins. That is the next step, but since most people use this skin, right now the hardcoded values are fine. (we do this at the Hanger Bay site, which is werid. jsut tried looking at the preferences, and it fails. (I'll work on this.)).
With that in mind, I pretty much got he Calender ext. working and possiable could get cite.php to work on the Hanger bay so we know the setup. That's about it. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 12:57, 29 April 2006 (CDT)

== german episode list does not work any more  ==
Hallo,
*1)
We have a german episode list. It is installed under all german episodes. It is at present the only instrument we have for the fast episode navigation and thus the most important.
http://www.battlestarwiki.org/de/w/Vorlage:Episodenliste
Now it does not work any more. I do not know about the technical stuff. I am working here only as a translator. Could you please look for the german episode list and make it run?
*2)
I began her as an IP. Now this is not possible any more. I am quite shure, that I never had began here as a translator, if I could not do this as an IP. At present we are only three active members in the german section. Would it not be better, to allow the IP editing, to get more people there. I have established a link to the german battlestar wiki in the german wikipedia battlestar article. I think, if an IP editing would be possible, we could get more people to work there.
Thank you for your attention.

I just used your pic as is, with some minor changes in scaling, rotation, and shadow. I'm not 100% done with it, but it's looking pretty good. I'd rather not spoil the "surprise" of what exactly I'm doing until closer to unveiling, but I could promise a preview before it is "published" (aka posted into my fan art thread). Joe... I'm not sure when you did it, but the new favicon appears... garbled in my Firefox. I think it's because of the image scaling. I'm guessing that it's just the logo shrunk down way. Follow the instructions in the email and everything should be set. Right now the skin that it set to is not found so I have no idea how you want to proceed. If you send me the style files for this style we are using now, I can edit the CSS file so everything can be unified and done only by CSS. It's both the "MediaWiki" color version and our colors version. Next time we are online. I guess we can work on transferring the images. --[[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 17:11, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
: I restarted the server. I also had to remove the redirect rules in .htaccess, since they didn't work anyway. Other than that, everything looks good. I figure the best way to move all the images would be to just copy the pertinent tables from the en-wiki database and the corresponding image directories. Then we should be good. (Also, I've found out that unifying the username databases is next to impossible under the current MediaWiki software, which is why all the Wikipedia sites don't have a unifying logon yet.) -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 17:35, 19 August 2006 (CDT)

== Redirect Image and Mediawiki JS ==
I have no idea on what you did last time to fix the "redirect" image, but you got it. :-) Second thing is the MediaWiki Image JS. Needs to be re-done. : The fix for the "redirect" image is simply removing the transparency of the png, using a white background. That's what's causing it to look the way it does using the BSGbook scheme. As for the file I edited for the tabs, it's "includes/SkinTemplate.php". Before I was called to my father's office, I was trying to get the tabs to show up on all the image pages across all the wikis. I've commented out the code, since it didn't work as well as I'd like, but the edited file is on server should you choose to have at it. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 13:54, 11 October 2006 (CDT)
: Ok, the tabs are working on the media wiki. (I still want to get the tabs cross-wiki as well for the Image namespace, so it makes navigation easier.) I've also fixed the png file. The reason why it screws up on BSG Wiki is because the PNG is transparent and the text (and arrow as well) are black, so that's why it looks like crap in transparency mode. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 18:44, 14 October 2006 (CDT)

== new contributor - audio episode guides? ==
Hello! Sorry to be a newbie, but, I've been a fan of the BSGWiki for quite some time, and I finally got a working headset and decided to give something back to the site if I could - I recorded the episode guide for '33' according to the script given on the Audio project page, and I was wondering where I should upload it for verification and such. If I did everything right, I should be able to record most of the audio for the episode guides within the week if you guys want - this seems like an interesting idea, I like doing voiceovers and audio work, and the Lords know I can't edit a wiki to save my life XD
Just looking to be pointed in the right direction, and asking the admin for help might get me there ^^ Thank you, [[User:Kobayashihikaru|Kobayashihikaru]] 14:41, 22 October 2006 (CDT)
: Hello! Nothing wrong with being a newbie! Anyway, all files are to be uploaded to the [[md:Special:Upload|Media Wiki]]. Just a question, though, how big is the MP3 file, because I may have to increase the upload limit on the server. Look forward to hearing back from you! -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 14:57, 22 October 2006 (CDT)
:: Whoa, thank you for the quick response ^^ I just finished recording the audio for the third episode guide, for Bastille Day, and so far the largest of the three is 2.3 MB in size - I tried to keep the file size down as much as I could out of compassion for those of us with dialup and for the BSGWiki server. :::: Okay, I uploaded the files to the MediaWiki, but I'm not sure where I have to go to flag them for review. The verifications page is coming up as an 'edit' link, and I somehow don't feel like I have the authority to make the page for the stuff I did to be reviewed at. >.> I'm going to provide links to the audio files here, so you don't have to go hunting for them - I -think- these links should work...

== Regarding the questions section ==
"Questions - yet again, this section is for questions -- not possible answers to questions!"
It just doesn't make any sense. A questions section without answers has no real purpose. I've seen speculative material posted over and over again at that section. Some questions are pertinent, but there are others which can be easily answered and shouldn't be there.
:The problem was that people went too far with it, especially at the beginning of Season 3. There were lots of trivial questions and overly lenghty replies. Also back and forthing where other people replied with counter arguments and questions, leading to lots of fanwanking and baseless speculation and opinionating. Very annoying to read.
:To me, the current solution feels restrictive too, but otherwise it's hard to draw a line on what to allow and what not. However, I agree that some questions have answers that could easily be explained within the context of the episode and without speculating much (like deducing Helo's or Kat's rank from their pins). Still, it's better than what went on before. --[[User:Serenity|Serenity]] 07:16, 9 November 2006 (CST)
:As Serenity points out above, people went too far with the questions section. We're an encyclopedic reference, not a message board. Firstly, much of our episode guide format is derived from the Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 (an excellent resource that pre-dates even Wikipedia), and we use its methods as a guide to our own episode guide. Secondly, any answers to questions given in the episode can be placed in either the analysis or notes sections, which is the more pertinent place for answers. Also, in general though, may I suggest that you comments of this nature to the [[Battlestar Wiki:Wikipedian Quorum|Wikipedian Quorum]], since this is more a general question and not specifically a question I should (alone) answer. Thank you. :-) -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 09:17, 9 November 2006 (CST)

== Hi again from Wikia ==
Hi Joe,
I saw the discussion about hosting, it sounds like you decided to try something else for now.  Best of luck with the adbrite tools.  If it is of any value, we'd be happy to discuss hosting you with the following if you ever change your mind <br>
* Ads only on content pages for registered users (not on talk, history, edit, etc) if that makes the site cleaner and faster loading.
* Offering attribution, Youtube, easier photo uploading (try our image button), polling, mapping and a bunch of other extensions that have improved functionality
* Links from the wikia home page to help you grow
That said, I respect the desire to build what you have, so best of luck with a great site - I'm a fan of the show and of your work.

: Hi Gil! Thanks for your kind words! My team and I will look into the features you've mentioned above. You also mentioned something about a link from the Wikia home page. ::Those are some really cool features, perhaps we could look into implementing a few of them here. I still have lots of concerns about moving to Wikia however, there would be a big increase in adverts on the whole wiki and of course if the site got popular enough to make a profit, you wouldn't see a penny of that Joe. I worry about the overall loss of control. The only real benefit is an already existing massive database of users already signed up and the advertising on a popular site. --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] ([[User talk:Mercifull|Talk]]/[[Special:Contributions/Mercifull|Contribs]]) 11:40, 30 November 2006 (CST)

==Requested Pages==
Joe, I don't think you should create requested pages if you don't have anything to fill them with. The red links encourage people to start articles - they don't see that nothing's there, they have no reason to contribute anything. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 01:43, 14 December 2006 (CST)
:The {{tl|requested}} tag however adds things to the [[Battlestar Wiki:Community Portal|Community Portal]], which people can then see to add pages for. By adding the requested tag things are actually listed rather than only appearing on the "broken links" page --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] ([[User talk:Mercifull|Talk]]/[[Special:Contributions/Mercifull|Contribs]]) 03:50, 14 December 2006 (CST)
::[[Special:Wantedpages]] serves the same function, and is the better choice, IMO. --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 14:00, 14 December 2006 (CST)
: Actually, the reason for ''requesting'' (as opposed to merely linking and thus having to deal with the "red link" effect) is for the benefit of [[Battlestar Wiki:Tasks]]. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 17:30, 14 December 2006 (CST)
::And why is this worth losing the red links? --[[User:Peter Farago|Peter Farago]] 06:00, 15 December 2006 (CST)
:::I think that having a list of pages wanted on the community portal might entice people to actually create those pages rather than wading though the red links. The majority of the red links are French anyway or direct links to images.  --[[User:Mercifull|Mercifull]] ([[User talk:Mercifull|Talk]]/[[Special:Contributions/Mercifull|Contribs]]) 06:47, 15 December 2006 (CST)
:::As Mercifull rightfully points out, a majority of the red links are mainly links in articles being translated, as well as defunct image and talk pages that do not exist yet. Also, [[Special:Wantedpages]] isn't particularly user friendly for those uninitiated in the ways of the wiki, and I say that viewing the wantedpages listing using a "customer" or non-technical user POV. The wantedpages feature on Mediawiki is very much structured to be used by the veterans or wiki-inclined. The ultimate goal is to make things as user friendly as possible. Any articles that '''really''' need to be created are deeply buried in the 700+ red links on that page. On a related note, I've noted that [[MemoryAlpha:Special:Recentchanges|Memory Alpha's RC page]] has a brief task list at the top. I feel that we would only benefit from having something similar as well. -- [[User:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|Joe Beaudoin]] [[User talk:Joe Beaudoin Jr.|So say we all]] - [[Battlestar Wiki:Site support|Donate]] 15:54, 15 December 2006 (CST)

== Verb Tense? ==
I just saw that an admin changed the verb tense on the edits I made to the [[Military Ranks (RDM)]] page to the passive, past tense, voice although the wiki policy states that we are to write in the active, present tense, voice.
When exactly is it appropriate to use the differing verb tense?

== Polish Wiki ==
Hello,
I'm interested in set up the Polish version of BSG Wiki. Translating [[Battlestar Wiki:Standards and Conventions/pl:Battlestar Wiki:Standardy i Konwencje|first article]] and gathering the crew is in progress. :) But I have several questions to you.
1. How it is with links in articles, that is being translating? For example if I have a link to "[[Water]]" episode, do I should change it to link to the "[[Water/pl: Woda]]", even if that article isn't existing yet?
2. Spoilers. I don't really know, how to solve this issue. To be honest, '''no''' BSG episode has been aired in Polish TV yet. We have been watching it in foreing channels. So how should I treat the spoilers? What informations are spoiler informations? All? None?
This is all for now. Hope my Engilsh is good enough to be understood by you. :)
--[[User:Glizda101|Glizda]] 04:22, 26 May 2007 (CDT)
:I can help with this.... right now in order to have the basic "[[Battlestar_Wiki:Translation_Project#Articles_Needing_Translation|things]]" ([[Battlestar_Wiki:Translation_Project/Required_Translations_for_Own_Wiki|plus here]]) need for your own wiki to function. We can take the "pl" files here on the and important them into the pl namespace... pl.battlestarwiki.org. They way you would link a pl.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Woda with en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Water is add <code><nowiki>[[en:Water]]</nowiki></code> to the bottom of the "Woda" page as explained in the [[BW:SAC#Category_Rules|BW:SAC]] and [[BW:INTER]]. Then the interwiki bot maintains the links on all the wikis so everything is cross-referenced. Spoiler information is then BASED off the English wiki if it doesn't "Air" per say in Poland. Any questions? Hope this helps. [[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 05:50, 26 May 2007 (CDT)
::Thank you for these informations. But, if you don't mind, I have one more question. If I want to create Polish article about "Water" episode I should name this article "Water/pl: Woda", yes? And when Polish Wiki will be created this article appear there automatically and it will be named "Woda"? Correct me, if I've understood wrong. --[[User:Glizda101|Glizda]] 10:50, 26 May 2007 (CDT)
:::Correct. For now do it here on the sub-page and I will move it later on the Polish wiki and we will rename it to just "Woda". [[User:Shane|Shane]] ([[User_Talk:Shane|T]] - [[Special:Contributions/Shane|C]] - [[Special:Editcount/Shane|E]]) 18:02, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

== Nested collapsible tables fix ==
== Nested collapsible tables fix ==

Revision as of 03:04, 17 June 2007

Nested collapsible tables fix

Nested collapsible tables don't seem to work very well (example). I've written a fix which makes nested coll. tables possible at User:Catrope/bsgbook.js. To implement this site-wide, you need to find the collapseTable() function (it's somewhere in a .js file, although I have no idea where exactly) and replace:

 function collapseTable( tableIndex )
 {
     var Button = document.getElementById( "collapseButton" + tableIndex );
     var Table = document.getElementById( "collapsibleTable" + tableIndex );

     if ( !Table || !Button ) {
         return false;
     }

     var Rows = Table.getElementsByTagName( "tr" );

     if ( Button.firstChild.data == collapseCaption ) {
         for ( var i = 1; i < Rows.length; i++ ) {
             Rows[i].style.display = "none";
         }
         Button.firstChild.data = expandCaption;
     } else {
         for ( var i = 1; i < Rows.length; i++ ) {
             Rows[i].style.display = Rows[0].style.display;
         }
         Button.firstChild.data = collapseCaption;
     }
 }

with:

 function collapseTable( tableIndex )

If you think this code may break anything, add

import_external('User:Catrope/bsgbook.js');

to User:Joe Beaudoin Jr./bsgbook.js and try it out. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 11:15, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

Cool, I'll get it implemented sometime later tonight, after I get off work. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 11:20, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
When you've done that, would you please delete User:Catrope/bsgbook.js? TIA --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 12:34, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
Apparently someone beat me to deleting your bsgbook.js. Anyway, the file in question is "common.js", and the site-wide one can be found at MediaWiki:common.js. (As one would anticipate, it is protected.) I did update it, but there seems to be an issue with it, at least on my end... See the talk page of the Think Tank in question. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 23:46, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, Spence deleted my page before you got the chance. I think your problem is that you have to do a hard refresh on the talk page: Shift+Reload button in Firefox 2.0. I did that and it works for me now. BTW, I also informed the official maintainer of the collapsible tables JS of my fix (coincidentally, he's Dutch too), and he said he'd verify it and merge it into the main branch when he gets back from his vacation. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 02:35, 8 June 2007 (CDT)

Deleted redirects

I noticed you deleted 401 and 4.01, while I intended for 403 and 4.03 to be deleted. The nastyness here is that when you click the "Article" button on a redirect's talk page, it'll go to the redirect target (rather than the redirect itself). So please delete 401 and 4.01 and restore 403 and 4.03. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 15:49, 11 June 2007 (CDT)

Where should 403 go then? He That Believath in Me? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 16:02, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
Ok, so I've redirected 403 and 4.03 to He That Believath In Me... The issue is, however, we don't seem to have an official production number for that episode. (From the comments I've read so far, it seems that the Razor is considered a part of Season 4 and may just be episodes "401" and "402". -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 16:08, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, I just noted that on the Razor talk page. The movie is 4.01 and 4.02. But that's production numbers. When people say "first episode of Season 4" they probably mean "He That Believeth In Me". Anyways, this also needs to be corrected in the episode data templates, unless those aren't meant for production numbers. ARG! Confusion --Serenity 16:11, 11 June 2007 (CDT)
Don't the TV magazines list the episode number? If that is the case, we'd better just delete the 4?? and 4.?? redirects and wait until January for HTBIM's episode number. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 06:31, 12 June 2007 (CDT)

A "Welcome Bot"

I was looking around, and I found this: http://botwiki.sno.cc/wiki/Python:Welcome.py Should we create? Shane (T - C - E) 07:08, 13 June 2007 (CDT)

While I'm usually all about saving time, it seems to me that there's some value to a personal greeting. When someone went to thank the bot for their welcome, the feeling of camaraderie may be... reduced. --Steelviper 08:36, 13 June 2007 (CDT)
A welcome bot doesn't seem very useful for me: we usually manage to welcome new users quite fast (sometimes even within 5 minutes of registration). The upside of the welcome bot is that it can automatically block disallowed usernames, which is quite useful. --Catrope(Talk to me or e-mail me) 09:55, 13 June 2007 (CDT)
I'm going to echo SV's statement here: I feel that users should be proactive in welcoming users, since it's an "icebreaker" of sorts. Also, we don't have a problem with welcoming users; as Catrope indicated, we welcome users fairly quickly, which is nothing short of awesome, in my book. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 16:13, 13 June 2007 (CDT)
Ditto. I'm happy how the process has matured over the years when I got into the swing of doing them...it's nice and personal, unlike a Cylon. :) --Spencerian 16:35, 13 June 2007 (CDT)
Aye. You mentioned it once... Just wanted you to know :) Shane (T - C - E) 07:22, 14 June 2007 (CDT)

You should..

Restore all your old chats and have the bot archive'em. :D Shane (T - C - E) 21:35, 16 June 2007 (CDT)

Should I do them as subpages or merely copy and paste all of them into my talk page? -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Sanctuary Wiki — New 21:41, 16 June 2007 (CDT)
Copy them in order on this page and the bot will do it automatically. Sub-pages would be bad. :) Shane (T - C - E) 21:52, 16 June 2007 (CDT)
